When I saw the Tennokai announcement, I kinda hoped this would actually make me wanna use actual melee weapons, for actual legit rip’n’tear with an extra layer of fun via the occasional heavy attack here and there.
The way it was implemented however… Eh. Feels like:
a) A waste of a mod slot, if not using the exilus slot;
b) Careful, non-blatant “bait” to spend 20 plat to buy the exilus slot adapters…
Due to Warframe being a F2P title, they do have to get money somehow. But come on… Not in this deceptive sort of way, eh? People WILL pay money, you don’t have to “subtly bait” them into it. Just actually offer something tangible for people to spend money on and they will!
So yeah, back to using glaive with exilus now - just not for tennokai mod, but rather the one that gives +60% movement speed after heavy attack hit (glaive explosion hits count as heavy attack, yup). Movement speed bonus on all frames, yay! \o/
Tennokai? Gimmick at best, if kept this way, as mods.
it remembers me of the time when stances and the combo counter where introduced.
some weapons got OP overnight because some stance where just so damn strong....
and the combo meter was not really that important nor usable... it still isn't at it's base
but than came the acolytes and everyone and their moms started using body count in their builds just to utilize the new mechanic...
TennoKai is just a "free" heavy attack every now and than
normally it's just not worth modding for a "hybrid" build, but with the new system and arcanes it's almost good
but yeah locking it completly behind a mod is rather questinable... and most ppl will only use it when they're willing to get the exilus adapter.. otherwise mod competition is weay too tight
so yeah +1 from me to make it a base thing for melee... or in the worst case atleast tie it to stances in one way or another
It's not as powerful as it may look at first glance, since it seems totally random when it happens (except for one mod). It's not a heavy-attack build enabler at all, you have to have good efficiency and/or fast combo generation in the first place.
Then, you look at what other options you get to put in that exilus slot, and there's nothing extraordinary :
- a 'parry' mod : that only works if you're getting meleed, which happens once a year.
- parry angle...
- the pseudo 'tank', active parry mod ("guardian something") that is useless since everything dies in seconds no matter who has the 'aggro' on the group.
- the +movement speed on heavy attack, which is actually useful.
- and that's it. the rest is several shade of tennokai, from 'never happens' to 'I can spam it'
Not at all interested in a system that doesn't even help me on demand with actual higher tier threats and can just proc on random adds.
If you could bank a high multiplier heavy attack, then I'd think about getting those exilus slots in use.
Also it's a bit weird how melee get an exilus slot to increase DPS, while ranged weapons have at best Vigilante set mods to splash.
Compare this to combo chains that require light attacks that end on a heavy. Games like Vindictus or other more combat focused mmos require an understanding of what combos do while typically rewarding longer combos instead of mindless spamming of attacks. I'll say that it may be a little unfair to compare these two games, one is fully focused on melee combat and the other is not. But in trying to spice of combos unlock competitors such as Destiny the Warframe devs start getting into the territory of better systems designed by other devs that focus on combos, light attacks versus normal attacks and the such.
Even games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring have the functionality of light-light-heavy built into animations while Warframe has heavy attacks as an animation and attack that is the same, while also taking over some of the combo system of light attacks.
Therefore your chances to change that are MINIMAL. But it is a great emphasis, it should be innate for all Melees. It is Fun, it is looking cool with the Lighting Effects and it actually made melee even more interesting!
It was mandatory to open these 20 Plat Slots on Primaries and Secondaries, now they fixed that hole and made it mandatory for melees too. From a business point of view that is amazing! I am already perma-crafting Ex Adapters together with the daily Forma now:
Interesting change from a lot of perspectives.
regardless tho , tennokai is a net-positive for the game
imho its a wonderful addition , and is just another aspect of the best update WF has had in years
on my sepfahn : opportunity reach +range to clear crowds ez and/or reach a distant enemy
on my GlaiveP ; was using whirlwind initially obvs , but switched to Dreamers Wrath due to GP already having fast enough flight spd
on any of the other thrown melee weapons just having an exilus slot to put whirlwind into without having to gimp the build and sacrifice necessary dmg for QoL is a HUGE plus
