as far as saved games go, its like an MMO, everything is automatic and on the server side.
as for exiting, alt f4 works on windows immediately, but if mid mission it will drop your current rewards and progress as if you never did the mission (minor things like item levels ups may be saved).
You can't also leave any on-going missions without losing what you're earned that far. 1st, you'll have to complete those to be lead back into your Orbiter and if those lead you back into cities... then it's a matter of following my above desbribed steps.
Similar happens when you do RailJack missions, you'll have to exit the mission into the Dry Dock once all objectives inside are met, then exit from that place into your Orbiter... and from that point onwards you al ready know the drill, right?
I may seem annoying at 1st, but after a few goes at it, you won't even tell the difference.
I believe the current version of it is supposed to be about 45-60 min long, so it is a bit much considering that 95% of the things you will do after that take 15m or less.

Ah, I see. I did not realize that replaced the real tutorial. Unfortunately this game is has morphed into almost a launcher for 5 or 6 sub games, Duviri being the latest. New content keeps going sideways from the original concept of your sword & gun frame off on random tangents. I am not complaining because its all free -- but you are not wrong to be confused by it all. Ive played it since launch and am confused by some of the new stuff.
U can choose now which u want as a newbie. Duviri or the normal one. The only down side is i think, then u choose the duviri tutorial the explanation why this is all happening is really late in the game.
Sure if you're an experienced player and know every bit of nuance about the game but for a brand new player being introduced to game modes like defense a nearly mandatory 5 minute mode, survival an absolutely mandatory 5 minute mode, and extraction which is also a nearly mandatory 5 minute + mode with little to no explanation, as well as void flood which can also take a while especially with the 0 explanation given for it and if you fail at any of those including the horrible downright awful drifter gameplay you have to start again.
