The idea when you're not being totally overrun and you're OK to actually try to kill him is to stay close enough to him that he doesn't shoot you with his gorgon. That thing can tear up a newer player who hasn't had the chance to fully develop modding. On top of that, if he's shooting at you, you can't hit his backpack because it's on the other side of him from you.
Once you're close enough that he puts away the gorgon and only melees, you can dodge the majority of his attacks quite easily by just waiting till he starts to swing and bullet jumping through him. At that point, no matter which attack he used (swing or slam) try to unload into his backpack before he recovers and turns back to you.
Eventually, once you've popped a hose on his back, he'll do his slam attack and stay frozen, That's when you unload as much damage as you can with your weapons until he stands back up. Melee is fine at this point if you want to conserve ammo.
After several times through this cycle of breaking the backpack then damaging him while he's vulnerable and frozen, he'll explode in flames and you won't have to break his backpack anymore. This is where you go completely nuts with damage because its the first time he can damage you while you're able to damage him. With Excalibur, this is the point to just push 4 and destroy him with exalted blade.
The main key is to learn his melee routine well enough to dodge behind him to break his backpack and make sure you keep him meleeing so he actually does his slam attack to freeze himself. If he's not actually slam attacking, he's not going to freeze himself and become vulnerable.
This mean's if you use a stealth frame, you need to use some special tactics to trigger this. My method for stealth killing (my normal solo sortie) is to take a primary that can deal high radiation damage to him and a secondary that can deal low damage with a 100% proc chance for radiation. Pop his backpack then proc radiation on an add and he attacks them usually slam attacking and freezing himself.
Even once he bursts into flames, he can still go invulnerable if he has no target to attack. He crouches down in a ball of flames forcefield until he has someone to attack. Just proc radiation on another add and continue to stealth snipe him.
While stealth frames do make it a bit easier (no real danger and easy backpack shots) they definately aren't needed to beat him. Just a correctly mod'd weapon dealing radiation damage if you have the elec + heat mods to mix or cold damage if you don't. Make sure he's in melee mode and not ranged mode, learn to dodge his attacks to get shots in on his backpack and unload when he freezes himself and you make it to phase 2 where it's just pure damage to win.
others can only be hit in specfic spots, and/or combine this with the former.
while ALL missions should be done in group, boss missions all but NEED to unless your high lvl
and even then its earier to do it in group anyway.
