Warframe Lore Question!! What is a Tenno?

We are humans (or humanoids) and according to Alad V, we have incredible power in our bodies. We power the Warframes with our own energy, granting us powers depending on the Warframe we choose. But to clarify, the Warframes do not have power, it is we who power them. So if the Corpus or Grineer were to capture a frame, they couldn't do anything to it like we can.

Like the Grineer and Corpus, a seperate human clade.

Transhuman soldiers.

Genetically and surgically augmented. Neural architecture heavily modified, possibly damping the 'consciousnes feedback loop' for faster decision-making. Definitely stripped out empathy.

Physically, ripped out anything that wasn't combat useful and added anything that was - removed sex drive, toned down pain response, no need for social interaction/touching, etc. Basically warrior monks taken to extremes.

Incapable of non-technologically mediated reproduction.

So mentally different from the Corpus, Grineer, and any other remaining human clades that they have great difficulty communicating across the cognitive divide.

I'm not sure if we have bodies besides the suits. Its always seemed to me we were just some kind of sentient energy that rides around in the suits and powers them. More like ghosts than anything else you listed, but not exactly.

What I want to know is who are we fighting for? Who are the people we rescue and where are they in the solar system. I know in the tutorial they are mentioned, but you never see them besides rescue missions.

Tenno ... is a race known as "tenno sapiens" ... which is ... which is "whatever" it is supposed to be.

According to some Codex entrys i assume the Tenno are Human, twisted by the Void which granted them their powers. See the Codex entry of Excalibur :

The Sentients had won. They had turned our weapons, our technology, against us. The more advanced we became, the greater our losses. The war was over unless we found a new way. In our desperation we turned to the Void. The blinding night, the hellspace where our science and reason failed. We took the twisted few that had returned from that place. We built a frame around them, a conduit of their affliction. Gave them the weapons of the old ways. Gun and blade. A new warrior, a new code was born. These rejects, these Tenno, became our saviors. Warrior-Gods cast in steel and fury striking our enemies in a way they could never comprehend.

Other quotes ingame ( maybe even Codex entrys ) let me think that the Tenno are not really Human anymore, more sentient energy. Like Alad V stating that Tenno dont even have eyes. There are some other quotes similiar to that, you just have to dig trough the Wiki / Codex entrys.

Another thing to consider is that the same tenno (you...us) can operate male or female formed Warframes.

Makes you wonder how the Orokin based their idea off of a prototype Warframe from thousands of years ago and named it after Hayden Tenno. And the fact that the Technocyte virus from the time of Dark Sector somehow is still alive and is now more powerful than ever before.

Going on what Clockworksaga said, each Warframe has a different Tenno inside of it. Its not, us as a character changing frames as it is us controlling a new character. The Tenno are humans that returned twisted from the void and the Orokin built the Warframes based on reports of what the Technocyte virus did to Hayden Tenno.
