How does the gas status really work?
I only ever see people run corrosive or viral in game but i hear gas status is decent in the forums all the time. So how does it work and whats the damage output compared to corrosive and viral damage?

When gas procs on an enemy, it creates a small cloud that puts a damage over time effect on all enemies that step into it. It's an effective status chance against human Corpus and Infested, though not so good on robotic Corpus, Grineer or Corrupted. It can be an effective way of dealing additional damage among a large group of targets, but corrosive and viral are a more reliable way of taking down enemies due to corrosive stripping away enemy armour, resulting in higher damage being done to them, and viral reducing an enemies health by 50%, making it require less damage to kill them.
Gas can be used effectively, it's just that most people now are too lazy to keep swapping elements on their weapons prior to missions, so corrosive is normally chosen as it's the good all-rounder.

thanks for the quick reply. So would you say gas status is good in endgame? ALso what primary element compliments the gas status if any? Ex. Corrosive is normally paired with heat

I wouldn't really call it end-game viable, or at least not sortie viable anyways, as enemy armour tends to scale too high and gas loses it's effectiveness, but anything up to around level 40 it's still quite usable. As for a primary combo, I'd say if you were going to use it against Corpus then cold would be a good one as that also has a bonus against them.
I'd like to also add to what Konachibi said that Gas can stack multiple times on one target (being Poison). This is what makes it pretty good against large groups of enemies, especially if your weapon has some sort of punch through built in - the status will just stack and stack and stack in circle, until everybody's dead.

I would say, it is effective if you find a proper weapon for it. Gaseous Ignis or Azima work wonders.

Also the Mutalisk Cernos, since it makes a gas cloud on every enemy or object the arrow hits. Great weapon to use with Saryn for easy spore popping.
Great suggestions i do remember an old thread concerning the corpus lightening gun (forgot name) that can chain lightening enemies with gas procs was also decent maybe? Idk

That'd be the Amprex. Sure I guess that could work. I always build the Amprex for mostly just crit damage and corrosive, but now that you mention it, building it for electric and gas could be significantly more effective for mass area damage and stunlocking. I'll have to give that a try next time I'm playing.

Problem with gas is, correct me if I'm wrong, that it only deals half it's original damage as toxin damage over time. And since people are impatient they take viral or corrosive weapons mostly.
Still lovin' the 'Truth' proc when fighting infested though. :3

I'm afraid, you are wrong. It actually starts ticking 125% of the procced damage as DoT.

Well the Pox works like the Mutalisk Cernos in that it creates gas clouds on impact, though I've never actually worked out if the damage of these gas clouds are affected by the weapons overall damage or if they can be increased by giving the weapon a gas build.
Also I tend to take pure toxic builds for the Mutalisk Cernos and Pox as I use them exclusively for Saryn and spreading toxic on spores is just the way I like it to work, can gas procs be carried with spores and boost it's damage? I really should experiment with this stuff as I could have been using Spores and toxic damage in a totally stupid way for over a year now and not realised it.

well to be fair saryn rework was just recent. Before the rework it was miasma spam and the damage/spread for spore was very underpowered. I also have a question if mutalist cernos and pox have a physical benefit to a gas build (i.e larger gas clouds and procs) and if its worth it for alternative endgame play.

What does the truth proc do against the infested?
