The Ferrox is to be built for critical and can do rather well against high level enemies. It can even act as a decent grouping tool when thrown, as it will pull nearby enemies to where it lands. This makes it pair well with melee weapons.
The Scourge is to be built for status, it too can do well against high level opponents when built right. As such, being a weapon with a decent status chance, it can be great when paired with a Condition Overload melee weapon. Likewise, it has nice utility when thrown, as any enemy near it will be significantly easier to headshot, making it pair phenomenally with the Knell or the Dual Toxocyst.
Then there's the Javlok, which is a hybrid weapon that in my opinion, doesn't have high enough stats to keep up with the other two. Mind you, it isn't bad, I just think it doesn't perform as well as the other two. Furthermore, it doesn't provide any utility when thrown, unlike the other two. The Javlok's throw just does raw damage, based on how many shots are left in its magazine. I admit, if you have a good riven for it, the Javlok will probably start out performing the other two.
They're not worth it, honestly.
Actually, the Ferrox does have an AoE. It's just nowhere near as big as the Opticor's (I little over half the radius). It even causes stagger, which is how I found out about it.
Also, whether or not they're worth it is definitely subjective. I'd say that if the Opticor is worth it, then the Ferrox is worth it. Sure its damage is a little over half the Opticors, but it has a much better crit chance, better crit multiplier, and much better riven disposition. Furthermore, it has some niche utility with its alt-fire.
Then when it comes to the other spearguns, I'd agree that the Javlok is questionable on whether or not it's worth it, but not the Scourge, as it's a very nice utility weapon.
