Nova prime?

Currently just rank 20 on it..But honestly, it looks beyond useless to me at this point.
In what type of missions is he good, and how am I supposed to use him well?

First: Nova is a She.
You can use a Slow Nova for Mobile Defence, Interception.
You can use a Speed Nova for Defence, and Stuff Like It.

Well first off Nova/Nova Prime is a girl. Second, I would try to use mods that buff here 4, dps, or crit (but most people go for dps and her 4). However if your problem is with dying then use the equilibreum mod, it makes it to were heal pick ups also give energy and energy pickups give health.

Nova useless? Are you seriously using Nova and not some other warframe and what makes her bad? You have not seen her potential at all.

Build for very low Power Strength, High Range and Duration. SHE helps with getting through Defense missions quick, and other assorted things. This is due to the low power strenght, which enhances the enemy movement speed to be much quicker.

Or you could just build her for High Range and Effiency for PoE.

EDIT: If you want useless, try Titania, Atlas or hell even Zephyr. Birb Prime = Mastery Fodder at its finest

If you think Nova is useless you should really read into what her abilities does. Her ult has endless scaling since it makes enemies that are primed take 2x more damage from any source. On top of that depending on your power strength you can slow them like crazy, or make them move faste while primed.

Well, as far as I can tell, the nr 4 ability, required me to go into the center of every monster, and doesn't seem to do much, other than exploding already dead enemies.
Nr 2 just doesn't seem to do anything at all. A joke of a ball.
And for the gender, who the heck cares.

Her 4 can hit the whole map and beyond with the right mods, her second stores tons of damage and can clear out a whole room if built around it. Just because you don't have the mods required doesn't mean she is useless =/

Her 4 slows enemies in a large AOE up to 75% and turns them into exploding barrels that can easily chain kill each other.

Her 2 absorbs damage and amplifies it for stupid levels of damage in a explosion that goes through walls. One shot from a Tigris (Prime) and that ball will do millions of damage and wipe everything in the room.

durations makes her 4th go way furtehr distance(for a time she could prime the whole damn map and steal all the kills) but still reach alarge number of enemeis slowing and weakening them.
really helpful on way higher level enemies, speed nova for makeing slow defenses more tolerable. slowing them on high levels is also really helpful
her 2nd is a power house. shoot it, it stacks damage and can lead to some crazy damage with strong enough weapons
and this is from someone who rarly plays her

How far does that "4" reach?
And I didn't know about shooting that ball, Thanks, certainly seems more useful now.

Kind of said "Useless as of now" as well as "rank 20"
So I'm well aware that.

While I'm not exactly enjoying my time with the regular nova (also about rank 20 funnily enough), She's quirky in that she benefits more from duration than pretty much everything else:
Null Star: More duration = more stars = more damage reduction to health (up to 90%)
Molecular Prime: More duration = how long the bubble expands for = more range
