* The first mode is just a normal Detonate. That is performed by throwing the Xoris at enemy and then when near, hit the throw key again. After it detonates, it will immediately return to your hand.
* The second mode is a 'Fully Charged' Detonate. To charge it up, you use normal throw & detonate against the floaty specters. You will want to fill all three pips just to the right of the reticle. Even after the pips are filled, you can still use the normal throw (but NOT detonate) of the Xoris. Once Protea (or if targeting the prisoners) goes into her Time Rewind phase, you use the Fully Charged Detonate on her yellow duplication forms.
Hope this helps. I practiced the Detonate on all the mobs on the way to the Protea fight. :)
The other thing I did was to map the Heavy Attack key to a mouse button so it was easy to throw and detonate.
Note: you do not want to detonate near you as it will knock you back and knock you down. Also, the Xoris will NOT travel through doorways or portal openings.

Thanks for the reply, everyone else seems hellbent on trying to insult me as much as possible.
"Doing The Protea Fight At MR6"
It details how I did it with normal gear one would expect to have at MR5 / MR6

Thanks but please check my profile. :)
No insult was intended, of course. Tricky fight, though. And the Xoris is not the most intuitive of weapons to use.
I'm still a newbie with only about 225 hours in game. :/
My heavy attack key is 'Q' and simply did not detonate
I rebound the key to RMB and then back to 'Q' and it now works.....
I started an alt and since I was doing one MR test a day I was quickly coming up on the MR9 test, which has always been problematic, so I thought I'd get the Xoris and practice with it in normal play. And it's really rather nice, also for farming focus when you're not ready for SO/ESO; you can get a lot of stealth kills with the 11 meter explosion.
I use the Volatile Quick Return mod, which makes it explode when it hits anything rather than bounce, and also adds bonus range to the explosion (you can still get an even bigger explosion by detonating it manually). I also use Power Throw for more damage, and Killing Blow for faster heavy attacks (I don't have the other mod that helps with that yet, I forget the name).
I just really wish glaives wouldn't ignore my heavy attack key. I've bound it to Q and it works with all other melees, even gunblades, but not glaives, so I have to hold down E to throw it instead (and then detonate with middle mouse, because Q doesn't work for that either).
Which makes it more awkward to use than it had to be.
For some reason you cannot use detonate if you're holding your secondary weapon as well as the Xoris. Switching to your primary *should* make it work!
