That's due to low loyalty which you can maintain for free. Genetic stability used to be quite expensive without the upgrade and still cost money with it. To keep affection up, just log in once a day and don't let your kubrow die. Should loyalty be low, just pet the kubrow (works up to three times a day), and it'll go back up.
