As soon as I pop out of my Frame, I get hit with one of his attacks and get sent back to my frame, which he then cuts down.
I maintain my position that DE cannot write a quest that is fun or enjoyable. They have a great game, but their quests are utter trash. Most of them are half-assedly interactive cutscenes interspersed with bitz of mind-breakingly convoluted ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Next. Read what need do on centre scene.
First need only stun Umbra. No need kill mob near Umbra (may even keep alarm). Give almost-you frame some fun or he became sad and try kill you. Just close draw, hit 5 (transfernce) then void blast and 5 again. View cinematic, play board game. (for corpus mission keep distance becauce Umbra pure melee, and burn Umbra with void beam first)
In "obtain Umbra" mission just repeat corpus mission without frame, get ready for many fly-in-void. Keep distance (running or void dash), burn shield with void beam then one void blast and transference.
I obtain Umbra with Mot amp without arcane. It possibly, just move and hit.
To OP:
If umbra comes at your operator, void dash through him and shoot him with your amp until he comes at you again. Void dash through him again. Basically do this until his shields are down and you are able to enter his mind. He is not able to damage you during void dash.
Getting an amp not only gives you 250 HP instead of 100, it also allows you to actually use your void dash and void mode, because the Amp's fire does not drain your operator energy, only its own.
jonnin is partially right, this mission is long and frustrating if you don't have an amp at all. Any non-mote amp will get it finished up FAR quicker than a Mote Amp though.
This is exactly what I did. I stood up on the rafters and kept shooting him until he died. After I completed the quest I invested into better gear/better mods and a new amp.
