Is there an actual reason to use more expensive specters?

The more stars a specter has, the higher level it is, the tougher it is, the more damage it dishes out.

Also lets you keep multiple kinds of specter for different jobs. Some for DPS, some for AOE, some for Tanking.

Vapor spawns at the starting level of the enemies in the current mission.
Phase spawns at the starting level of the enemies in the current mission, plus three levels.
Force spawns at the starting level of the enemies in the current mission, plus five levels.
Cosmic spawns at the starting level of the enemies in the current mission, plus ten levels.

Unless they chamged something I don't think you can have multiple warframe specters no matter their type. You can have a warframe, clem and a syndicate specter at once though.

True, you only get one specter per mission. Plus Clem, if you want him.

But I'm not always running the same build, so I'll want something that goes with what I'm running at the time.

They can be used to store different specter loadouts but functionality wise they're not any different because having a few more lvls does not make any difference.

None at all. Vapor specters use abilities at the same frequency as other ranks and the HP and damage buffs are minuscule. Give the Vapor an Exergis or Tigris and they will shred pretty much anything. And in the VERY UNLIKELY instance of a specter dying, just pop out another one.You get 10 per craft and they're dirt cheap anyway. The amount of credits and resources needed to craft higher rank specters is just not worth it for what they offer.

Under "Tenno Specters Behavior" you can see how each Warframe behaves as a specter.
