Until recently in fact, Carrier (and by extension, Carrier Prime), was the most used companion in the game by a huge percentage. It's only recently, since they added the vacuum mod to all sentinels as well as the fetch mod for our furry companions that it's slowly becoming usurped from it's throne, but even then, if one is using a weapon that chews through ammo, Carrier will always be the better choice.
By default sentinels tend to be pretty squishy, they have survivability mods that increase shields, health and armour (a pretty default thing to put on them), but outside of that there's the Regen mod, and Primed Regen when Baro brings it, that lets your sentinel respawn after death.
As a rule sentinels don't need to be too tough, since they'll rarely take damage outside of AoE weapons like napalms or bombards.
Dethcube is just mastery at this rate and his gun is pathetic even when fully modded.
After that, I like the long range ones. I dislike carrier because it can't shoot outside about your melee range. I like diriga best and mine uses dethcube's rifle at long range to do solid damage. The other long range one is the infested looking one.
sentinels in general are a good place for stuff you don't have room for in your frame, like loot/enemy radars, along with vac of course.
You’ll find sentinel survivability mods eventually. They come in several flavors - straight buffs or link buffs. Straight health buff gives a set multiplier, link health buff gives your sentinel a percentage of your frame. So links are more powerful if your frame tanks in the corresponding stat (health/armor/shield).
It takes a lot of forma and potatoes and later game mods to make a sentinel much of a powerhouse, but that goes for all companions.
But unfortunately sentinels are *Obsolete* (now pets have a stronger vacuum, higher range pickups & moves all around your position=even more range). & many times more damage & *Buff* your crits, loots & support you many times better. Why even have sentinels now?
Wyrm Prime has the best balanced health/shield/armor stats, his Crowd Dispersion is excellent for occasional crowd control to send enemies flying a mile away from you. His exclusive precept from Cephalon Simaris, Negate, will protect you from a Status proc and only has a cool down of 5 seconds.
Djinn is the ultimate in survivability for a Sentinel though. His health/shield/armor stats are middle of the road, but using his exclusive precept from Simaris, Reawake, will revive him 90s after death, ensuring he will never be gone for good not matter how long the mission. Fatal Attraction is a good crowd control precept that keeps enemies still, and Djiin is the only Sentinel I think to come with a Naramon ( " - " or "bar" ) polarity, which is nice for throwing Animal Instinct on quickly for that loot/enemy radar.
sahasa kubrow and smeeta pretty much the superior companions
