Fortuna Tranq rifle killing animals

So Ive just gotten into Fortuna and I'm having trouble with the hunting mechanic, and more specifically the Tranq rifle. I've only just gotten the basic rifle and probber lure, and I've tried my hand at a couple spots for hunting, but every time I try and tag one of the little buggers, the "tranq" rifle turns into what I can only assume to be a .50 cal and subsequently the probber is promptly turned into paste. I'm getting very frustrated by this whole ordeal and as I can't seem to find anyone else having this issue I guess I'm doing something wrong here. Any help or advice that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Well crapbaskets. That's gonna be a tough thing to work around. Either gonna have to switch to a less powerful frame or experiment and see if I can do something to avoid that happening

Fun fact: Volt/prime's passive also lets you use Cetus fishing spears to kill enemies. Quite fun to do although rather ineffective.
