Checking for update slow or stuck - workaround included!
Hey guys,

after updating the game via steam, I pressed "play game" in the steam ui. The launcher popped open and began to "check for new content", with a rate between 400b/s and 2mb/s. I wondered if the steam update might have failed, so I closed the launcher, uninstalled the game and completely reinstalled it via steam. Same issue.

Then I went, via steam, to "browse local files", and opened the launcher directly from the installed directory inside steamapps/common. Via 10 seconds it "checked for new content" and I could play. Yesss! Now, same machine, same isntallation, I open steam, click on "play", the launcher opens, and checks for new content. With 1mb/s. It takes ages. Closed it, opened from directory, it's instantly playable. Opened via steam again, checking for updates in slow.

Why? And what to do? I find strange, that obviously something updates, even though I updated it inside steam and it obviously is up to date.

How do you mean "update via steam" exactly?

Well... you have a game in your steam library. and you update it, inside steam :) isnt that the common way on steam?

Most believe that steam version of WF is outdated by few years. It is not true for a long time now.

If you go into library and verify there, it is an older version. Not by much but it is not kept exactly the same as the launcher version unless you happen to grab it the day they updated the steam one.

Always verify game files through the warframe launcher ... gear icon at top above PLAY.

Try that and see if that fixes it.

If not you can probably google for a guide about moving the game to another drive... they have some steam files you have to move around as well as game files so it may lead you to a solution for your issue rather than downloading the whole thing again twice.. or the steam version then the update from the launcher.

That's true, for majority of games that aren't online exclusive.

As for vast (if not all) majority of Online games, especially ones that have their own launcher, update / validate through the launcher itself.

This is common knowledge since year 2k. (Or before that)

That might be true, BUT: Same machine, same install of the game, yet when accessing the launcher via steam, it updates superslow, whilst opening the launcher directly from the steam install path does not require any updates.

As I wrote: I launched it via launcher directly, works, no updates required. I launch the exact same game (!!!) via steam and it updates and superslow. AFTER update via launcher. Which doesnt require aditional updates, when opened directly.

The steam one sees that the game is different ... it does not recognize that it is more updated.
Like I said, search out that guide it may help you avoid downloading again.

I'm not trying to argue with you here... the fact is the install got broken. You have some options to try to fix it. Telling the forum it shouldn't be isn't helping you, accept the truth and move forward.

I understand you, completely. But it is the forum for the steam release of the game. Which program is steam opening, if not the launcher that is on the hard drive in the warframe folder? are there two launchers installed?
