Murkray fishing - how do you use the murkray bait?

I crafted 20 murkray bait and tried to put it on my gear wheel. When I do is says the bait will be available while fishing. When I start fishing the bait is not on the gear wheel. How do I use the bait?

When you have a fishing spear out, your 1-3 keys are given new functions. Holding 1 will let you look through your available spears, holding 2 will let you look through your available baits, and holding 3 will let you look through your available dyes.

Since you don't put Baits in your normal Gear wheel, just take out your spear and hold 2. That'll open up the independent Bait wheel.


This goes for all Spears and the animal preservation gear in Fortuna, that you only have to equip one thing in your normal gear wheel for these submenus to appear and be able to access of all that related gear.
You only have to put one fishing spear of any type, including the electric Fortuna ones, and that new wheel while holding 1 will let you select through all of your owned spears. With the animal preservation gear, you only need to put either the Tranq rifle or any of the Echo Lures in your normal gear wheel and those new functions will let you look through and equip the Tranq Rifle and all your available Echo Lures

Equip the fishing spear. Press and hold 2, select the bait from that wheel. Done.

Thanks for the great explanation. I can see the bait now but when I select it the wheel disappears and I still have the spear in hand and not the bait. I still do not understand how to use the bait.

Well, for the fishing gear slots of 2 and 3, they always have something selected. When you hold those keys to select something new in those wheels, they replace what was previously there. Once they're like that, just simply press, not hold, 2 or 3 to use that.

So hold 2, click on your Murkray bait, then press 2 whenever you want to toss one out.
When you want to switch to another bait, hold 2 and click on the bait you want, then press 2 to throw it out. Same deal with the dyes in the 3 slot.

And as a general fishing tip, since it's moderately vague unless you read through the wikis or guides, bait bests works when near hotspots in the water. In the Plains of Eidolon, hotspots appear as white foamy splashes in the water. Throw your bait into or in the proximity of where those foamy splashes are, and it'll work best. Some baits ONLY attract their fish if it's a hotspot.

Also Murkrays are oceanic fish, so the bait won't work in lakes or ponds. Use it in hotspots along the beaches, either on the south side or east side of the Plains map.
