Healing Return if you don’t have life strike, lol.

Otherwise Life Strike.

Do you have a status build or not?

Healing Return if you have a very fast-hitting melee weapon with 100% Status chance.

Life Strike or none otherwise.

Yes, and quite a sum of energy if maxed out.

Yes, and quite a sum of energy if maxed out.
Why would you ever max it out?

why not... 99% of the mods i use are all maxed out... you would be wasting a mod slot otherwise

Life Strike is very good without upgrading. Healing Return on the other hand requires you to max it and most likely add a forma to fit it into a build. Life Stike only takes up 4 mod energy.

Some people just like to max stuff out for no reason. In Life Strike case, I do agree that it will cause more harm than good by maxed it out.
Only thing I've ever used either one for is Exalted Blade. Healing Return for my 100% Status Chromatic Blade build, Life Strike for my non-CB build (yes, contrary to popular belief, Life Strike does indeed work on EB). For most other melees, it really just isn't worth it.

i despise life strike simply because it REQUIRES melee to be out. or for you to be a exalted weapon valkyr/wukong/excal. if your either of those 3, then life strike. otherwise healing return and a fast, high status chance melee since it works on quick attacks. (orthos prime *wink*)

Don't need 100% status unless you are taking a large amount of damage. Even at 50% status, you can gain back a good amount of health with a single slide attack if you have multiple element types on your weapon. Rank 4 mod for +5 health for each status effect, for each hit. If 5 enemies are hit, 2 of them get 2 statuses, 1 of them gets a single status, that is 25 health (which is about as much as a healing pickup or arcane healing will give you) with a single strike. Strike again and you'll usually have a status on every enemy, and 2-3 statuses on several of them, recovering even more health. Even without a fully ranked mod, a weapon with high range can recover 100-200 health very quickly. Higher rank mod, even more health back. If you use Redeamer or Sarpa, every pellet hit causes a impact status as well as normal effects of the weapon, essentially allowing you to get that 10-100 health (depending on rank) per shot, at a minimum.

Life strike on the otherhand doesn't work with quick attacks and requires you to channel the weapon. Although this can get you life back more quickly, it leads to much less versatility and limits the number of situations where it is even useful. Although you can get back more health with a single attack with Life Strike, you are also expending much more energy per channeled attack even when you don't need all that health.

Healing return lets you heal without actively taking it out, but is muuch slower at healing and requires status effects on the enemies.
So Life strike if you want to play mainly with your melee and quickly heal while doing so, healing return for some heals on the side.
