Can not be removed. Have to craft another for another weapon or buy one.
In the mean time, try out some other weapons. You might find some you like more. And always check to see if there is a superior version of a weapon before you invest in it. I made that mistake by dropping a catalyst and two forma into the Tetra for funsies, only to realize the Prisma Tetra existed.
These are amongst the rarest items, but blueprints for both are occasionally rewarded for alerts or invasions. And can be purchased on the market for 20p (which is very cheap as you get into trading regularly).
It's not terribly hard to stockpile lots of them over time, but many newer players get annoyed with how rare they are. You really have to watch alerts and invasions very often to catch them. They also usually have special alerts for them on days of Devstreams (as there was just last Friday).
Only the 1 hour Derelict Survival against lvl 130 (i think) was a problem.
I have a braton prime with forma and catalyst in it. Yes its viable, but before you do that, you should join a Dojo and get yourself a Baza. Try both of them and then make your choice. In retrospect i ended up using the Baza more than the Braton even tho i enjoyed the Braton enough to want it.
But don't mistake Catalysts for something that will make your gun stronger, because you need the mods to do that. So what you should do is think about whether or not you can get by with just the stock 30 mod space.
Depending on where you are in the star chart, you might not even need that much because the early content difficulty is forgiving enough. Let alone the fact that you may or may not even have enough full-rank mods to take up more than 30 units of space in the first place. You will eventually, but early on you might not.
