Once you get it to rank 30 for the mastery exp, you can toss it and use a better gun.
For the Mk-1 Strun you'll want to get it to 30 and then buy the regular strun (go to your market terminal and search for 'strun'), which is everything it is and more. If you're new which it sounds like you are you'll frankly get it to 30 before you get the mods to make it usable unless a vet feels like handing you some charity mods (many will since they end up with loads of mods they dont know what to do with through regular play)
As for how to mod the strun.. damage, damage and more damage. Any kind of damage you have aquired so far unless you have all the basic mod types at which point you'll want corrosive (toxin and electric) and heat for grineer, magnetic (cold+electric) for corpus and gas (heat+toxin) for infested (basic heat is good vs them too)
Anything else would just be a complete waste. MK1 strun, even with a very good riven and about 6 forma thrown on it would have significant trouble with even level 50+ enemies due to the low base damage, low base status/critical chance, and low ammo capacity. This is intentional so that lower MR players are forced to eventually complete rank tests and build or buy better equipment. But there is also no reason why a low MR player would benefit from going through the expensive process of fully kitting out a MK1 weapon for higher level content. Even many of the MR2-4 weapons end up being just too inferior to handle higher level enemies no matter how it is modded.
