How do you trap these cephalon targets?
This game, man. No prompts for trading under that tree in Maroo's, no instructions on how to trap these Cephalon targets. I used the trap (the ghost-busters trap) and he is held in the air. I have wasted 5 of those now. Now what? I used the scanner after this on him and nothing. What am I supposed to do? He gets held in the air and then dropped. How many steps are there to this trapping process?

This game is excellent but there are areas, especially in the gear wheel, where the player is left to flounder. I figured out that I had to use Q under Maroo's tree to finally trade there, but there were no instructions. This time I could use some help because I have wasted these ridiculous fixed use items (I have no idea how to get more, probably have to spend plat, I imagine).

This is very frustrating. And I have smashed Dark Souls so I don't want to hear anyone telling me that I want hand-holding. Some basic instructions in the gear wheel would be great for a future update. Thank you for any positive help from decent people, and if you are irritated by my minor criticism of the game, please move along. Thank you.

If you're talking about the chains of harrow part, you have to use the trap and then shoot it up with your weapon till Lotus says you collected the emotion.

If you mean regular cephalon targets, then use a trap, pull out your cephalon scanner, (both can be purchased at Simaris' sanctuary) and hold the left mouse button over one of those green-ish yellow spots on the target's body. Scan all of them and you've collected the target.

Targets are specific enemies... not just the same type.

You need to track it with the scanner and it will have 4 glowing balls in it. You must scan target 4 times to collect the balls.

He is running around right now with that gold icon on him. I think that four balls part happened. Cephalon spoke and told me to trap him. I set the trap and he is held by the blue electrical charge. Then he is dropped and runs off. Am I supposed to scan him while he is held in the air? I have wasted a bunch of traps and regret even bothering with the Cephalon Similaris part of the game. I won't be doing any more of it.

Yes, you are supposed to scan him with the synthesis scanners. I understand and empathise with your frustrations, I started playing February this year and I ran into this exact problem. Don't worry, once you get a hang of it it's really easy. Simaris has some goodies and building your rep with him is worth it.
I figured it out. You have to scan the portions of his body on which the balls are placed. Very, very frustrating. Wow! Thanks for all of the help. I guess those traps are just to help you out but you don't need to trap him.

I don't even use the traps, just scan them while he is running around or better yet sneak up on him next time.

Yeah, I understand it completely now. I don't recall receiving any information on scanning spots on the target's body.
It get's easier ;)
I would recommend

Jumping and sliding mid air.

This wil lleap to a jump kick that can knock enemies over good if you are having a hard time with one and don't want to waste traps.
pretty sure there is a playable tutorial for this, at least their use to be...............
I guess you didnt notice the multiple bright balls that stand out while you are in scan mode.

The way the tutorial is off to the side in the ship is not a good way of integrating the tutorial within actual gameplay. When you first meet Similaris and take his mission, the tutorial should come up then, or you should be given a dry run of the entire process. Then you are ready to go out and hunt.

As I mentioned in my initial post, if you have nothing positive to add, move along. Those balls tell you nothing. Balls appear on things in this game all the time. There is no indication that I have to scan these particular points. For a new player like me, I thought they were part of the scanner display I was using on him.
Go visit Simaris in any realy...
Talk to him.
Chose the option to do the tutorial.
Everything (more or lesss), about Synthesis Scanning will be explained.

(As far as I know, that's the only real tutorial in the game, so far.)

Yeah, my first Simaris experience was similar. I do remember burning through a few scanners until I realized the significance of those marked points.

I don't usually trap them, though. I still have some traps in my gear, but since my scanners are fully upgraded and I "hunt" with Rhino, I don't care if I have to give it a few tries to hit the spots -- in fact, I very much like it if the target stops to attack me :-) Well, except for that Corrupted Bombard or whatever that is, which only appear in high level missions and really do some noticable damage -- I have to be bit more careful with those. But I prefer to do Simaris in low level maps if possible. I also have Artrax on my Sentinel, which can slow it down.

Also, the scanning process is somewhat bugged, or inconsistent, or whatever you want to call it. If I don't release the button when loosing the spot, I can often get the scanner back on target and it seems to not have lost the previous time. Also, I get the impression that the spots just mark general areas -- my scans feel way more successful than they should be, leading to me thinking I don't need to hit those spots precisely and scanning nearby works too.
