Either way you can do circles between the big lake and cetus doors killign everything including kuakas and condorocs to find them. Even if you can't kill the critters, getting close to them makes them run away and despawn.
The grounded ones share spawn points with the critters and single flying ones can spawn when you get close to certain trigger points. When that happens, you can hear something like an explosion in the distance likw with the drop ships spawning but you don't hear the sound of the drop ship flying after the sound of the spawning. That means it's a solo flying dargyn usually just out of sight range in the direction you were moving.
If you keep turning and trying to look around you, you are pretty much "causing nothing to happen" because you are not rolling that dice at all.
