How important is status chance?
How important is status chance?
What's the difference between building a weapon around status chance and building a weapon around pure damage without status chance mods?

Status chance allows you to take advantage of the procs associated with each damage type.

Corrosive: Each proc permanently strips armor from the enemy. Enough procs will remove it entirely.

Viral: A six-second debuff that reduces enemy max HP by half; if you can kill them in that six-second window, you need only half as much effort to do it.

Magnetic: Same as Viral, but reduces shields to a quarter instead of health to half.

Gas: Produces a cloud that toxin procs (see below) enemies passing through it.

Radiation: Confuses enemies for several seconds, causing them to choose targets indiscriminately and makes them valid targets for friendly fire.

Blast: Ragdolls the victim and enemies near the impact point, forcing a knockdown.

Cold: Slows enemies significantly for several seconds.

Heat: Places a heat-damage DoT on the target, and causes them to panic, flailing around as they burn.

Toxin: Places a toxin-damage DoT on the target. Since it's toxin damage, it bypasses shields.

Electric: Stuns an enemy and may stun additional enemies that wander too close to the victim.

Impact: Staggers the enemy briefly.

Puncture: Reduces the amount of damage that an enemy can do for several seconds.

Slash: Places a slash-damage DoT on the victim that bypasses shields and armor.

Status chance is what allows weapons to scale into high levels. Raw damage and Crit start to fall off around lvl 100 and up.

Most useful Status are:
- Corrosive
- Slash
- Viral

If you have no status chance, the weapon will still do all the damage you put in to the weapon, but it wont have a chance to proc any of the status effects kindly listed above.

Thanks for all the info, I have one final question.

If the base status chance of a melee is atleast 20%, is it worth building it around status or raw damage? On that note actually, is it worth building any weapon that is not viable with status?

The only reason status scales farther than crits is because crits have, at best, a 16 something X mutiplier, where as status is for slash 250% and fire / toxin 350%.

if has 20% you can't reach 100% status without rivens and combo multi mods. While not as effective, paired with condition overload will help your damage

No, it's because Status procs do the same thing regardless of level. The ones I highlighted are effective because they make the enemy easier to kill. On high level enemy's, Status should be doing more work than actual damage.

status typically scales the best, corrossive removes 25% of armour whn procced, pure damage will be stronger initally, but status is the tortise, it always wins eventually.
