But since you just got out of the tutorial you havent yet had time to actually get introduced yet.

But basically there is a not so cold war going on between Corpus and Grineer factions for domination of the Sol system at the start of the game.

Lotus the lady talking to you is the one who unfroze you and has a history with the Warframes whom she calls Tenno. This history goes back to just before Orokin civilization fell and the Warframes went into cryosleep. Centuries ago.

TL;DR version, if I remember my lore correctly:

Captain Vor is a ranking military officer of the Grineer, an aggressive and totalitarian race of cyborg clones suffering from severe genetic degradation of their cloned organic tissue. Vor, through some of his actions, has been knocked down a few notches in the Grineer command structure. The Tenno are in most ways a mystery to nearly all residents of the solar system; the main thing that is known about them is the great power they possess, the advanced technology that the Warframes must be constructed from. Vor believes that if he captures a Warframe and learns its secrets, he can find something that he can use for personal gain, to climb back up the totem pole to a position of prominence, possibly helping his people with that advanced technology along the way.

Vor is a higher up in the Grineer skirmish wars over the origin system. Warframes are biomechanical ninja assasins built using ancient lost technology. Given the Grineer are a biotech cloned soldier race themselves, acquisition of warframe technology presents lots of possible opportunities for them.

The best way to approach the lore is to treat your Warframe as the only one in the system. ie like a single player game.

As Totally Innocent Chatbot said. Warframes are relics of the distant past and Vor wants to use them to empower the Grineer to win the war and Dominate the system. Just to clarify its actually the events of the tutorial that knocks Vor down the command chain from Commander (Mercury) to Captain(Ceres)

Basically the galaxy has kind of been knocked into a technological dark age. And thats why You have been in stasis for so long. ( Not entirely true but you wont be clear on it until youve gone through all the story missions)

Im being vague on all of this since its a massive lore and story quest spoiler and you only just started. And I love exploring all the scans, and item description to piece together that lore.

-----

The 4 big factions are

Orokin ( basically the ancient super technologically advanced race) Elite caste of that race. Their civilisation has fallen and thats what has set the galaxy back

Corpus ( remnants of the middle classes of the Orokin) Basically rhe folks who survived the fall of covilisation. Since they were mostly merchants in the old days they have now formed a Mega Corporation.

Grineer ( Clones.) They were basically the slave labour for the Orokin civilizations. And expendable infantry for their battles. Led a slave rebellion after the fall of civilislzation

Sentients (story spoiles) Created by Orokin...

----

The smaller facions are

Warframe. Created by Orokin as the super elite super soldiers. You and how you tie into the Orokin is what the story quests are about. But during the fall you went into cryosleep.

Other huminoids.

There are human like factions that like the Corpus were Orokin but decided to form their own groups. Ostorns on earth are one such group.

Infested. A bio weapon the Orokin created that got loose and they couldnt control. Pre-dates Warframes.

------

Story Quests are

Natah, Second Dream, War Within, Chains of Harrow, Sacrifice, 2x secret quests.

The other quests like A New Strange, Sands of Inaros and all the ones with Alad V, do have some story elements in them but more just world lore than main story progress.

Sadly much of the lore is now not as fleshed out in game as they were tied to big events. The events are around but the lore pieces arent shown any more. ie the Balor Fomorian event and Proxy Rebellion that just passed. And The whole Alad V storyline.

If you enjoy the lore, I'd recommend even playing the technical prequel to this game called "Dark Sector" which I believe was on xbox 360. Very neat game for its time, Although not as innovative and the movement isn't as "Flashy". You can sprint, roll, but you can't catapault your self through the air and wicked spins and such.
