Can anyone recommend a good beginner side arm?
I'm making my way through ceres atm, and I just...hate my side arm. I have the LATO and it just...feels so weak. I could care less to use it 99% of the time.

EDIT: Mastery rank 3

Would be helpful to know your MR.

Kitguns from Venus are excellent, the bits you get access to early will be usable until you have earned the later parts which are useful for almost any content.

At MR 2 I like Hikour, Kunai and Sonicor.

At 3 the Lex and Sicarus are okay.

Sorry, still new x_x

My mastery rank is 3
at MR 3 the Sonicor is a lot of fun and pretty powerful (and definitely worth a forma or three)
Going to 2nd the Lex. It does a good amount of damage. Here's a link to compare weapons for future reference.

You can sort it by mastery rank then look through the stats to make a comparison.
Your mods will give the most mileage, even the Lato can be built well with a good mod list

Bronco is a decent status shotgun pistol for an MR0 requirement, with an akimbo version at MR2 if you need more shots. If you have the elemental mods and understand how they combine and who is weak to what, you can get a lot of mileage out of status-focused weapons.

Furis is a good machine pistol for just about anything.
Can be upgraded to Afuris when you reach MR4.

atomos. MR 2, hardest part is argon crystals that you have to farm in the void. lower level ones have a low drop rate, should get them in 4ish runs. easily 1 run in higher level void missions.

that's if you want an aoe weapon that scales well with forma's. works well right to end game. might need to craft the carrier sentinel for ammo though, or you'll be using your primary once in awhile.

oh and go pure damage. no 60/60 mods when you eventually get them. there's just no need for status sub level 100, things just die too fast.

Here's a list of the 16 elemental damage mods that you need to get your hands on. You can either buy them from players using platinum, or you can farm for them. Either way, you need them, because they can help you ignore Grineer armor, Corpus shields, and Infested health.

RIFLES:
Infected Clip (Toxin)
Hellfire (Heat)
Stormbringer (Electric)
Cyro Rounds (Cold)

PISTOLS:
Pathogen Rounds (Toxin)
Heated Charge (Heat)
Convulsion (Electric)
Deep Freeze (Cold)

SHOTGUNS:
Contagious Spread (Toxin)
Incendiary Coat (Heat)
Charged Shell (Electric)
Chilling Grasp (Cold)

MELEE:
Fever Strike (Toxin)
Molten Impact (Heat)
Shocking Touch (Electric)
North Wind (Cold)

Here is also a list of the 6 dual-elemental damage types that you need to further boost damage. Some ignore armor, some strip shields; some deal bonus health damage, and some slow the enemy down.

TOP TIER:
Corrosive --- Toxin + Electric --- ignores the armor of Grineer Lancers, Troopers, Heavy Gunners, Seekers. Anti-large Infested, sometimes reduces their armor.
Radiation --- Heat + Electric ---- ignores the armor of Elite Grineer Lancers, Bombards, Napalms, sometimes distracts enemies.

MID TIER:
Viral --- Toxin + Cold --- bonus damage to all Grineer, sometimes halves enemy health.
Blast --- Heat + Cold --- bonus damage to large Infested, sometimes knocks enemies down. Opens enemies to powerful, armor-ignoring melee finishers.

LOW TIER:
Magnetic --- Electric + Cold --- bonus damage to Corpus shields, sometimes reduces it too.
Gas ---------- Heat + Toxin ----- bonus damage to small Infested, sometimes AoE damage.

EDIT: If you can't slot 2 elemental damage mods, or can slot 3 but not 4, consider the following basic elements and their bonuses:

Toxin --- Can accompany Radiation, Blast or Magnetic damage --- Ignores Corpus shields completely, the armor of Grineer Lancers, Troopers, Heavy Gunners and Seekers. Sometimes deals damage over time.

Heat --- Can accompany Corrosive, Viral, or Magnetic damage --- Bonus damage to low-level Grineer and small Infested, sometimes deals damage over time.

Electric --- Can accompany Viral, Blast or Gas damage --- Bonus damage to Corpus robots, sometimes stuns enemy groups.

Cold --- Can accompany Corrosive, Radiation or Gas damage --- Ignores the armor of Elite Grineer lancers, Bombards, Napalms, sometimes slows individuals down. Sometimes improves Nekros' Desecrate ability for more loot.

@OP, the weapon's damage potential is highly dependant upon which mods you have fitted to the weapon, and the level of the equipped arsenal mods.
The worst weapon in the game, properly modded, should still be stronger than the 'best' weapon in the game without mods. :-)

Also, your MR grows as you level weapons/frames to 30. So even sub-par weapons have value, as they can help you gain access to stronger weapons.

I'd recommend checking your Clan's (guild's) Dojo (guild hall) and check the four Lab rooms to see if there are useful weapon blueprints available.
While you're still progressing through the star-chart and unlocking planets, many of those won't be useful because they'll need components you don't yet have access to - but knowing that source exists is still useful.

Also check the in-game Market terminal (up the ramp in your ship, on the right-hand side) and search for "MK1" weapons. If you started with the Lato, the Mk1-Kunai should be an alternative.
Not implying that it's powerful - even with
https://warframe.fandom.com/wiki/Hornet_Strike
but those MK1 weapons will help you gain MR, and don't require material components to acquire.

Weapon them selves are not really weak or strong. What matters in the end of the day is what mods you equip it with. In other words everything is going to feel weak compared to other players until you get some mods to power them up.
Currently atomos and sonicor for me (at saturn atm. Havent formad or potatoe. Yet). The basic lex bit slow and low ammod for me.
Lex is easy to get and a powerful early game side arm.
If you can get your hands on 2 argon cristals from the void missions, Atomos is very strong and very fun to use.

Welcome and have fun Tenno. :LotusFlower:
Lex, and lex prime after that, was my main secondary weapon for years. Secondary weapons, unlike the primary ones, deppend in what you want from them.

Some are perfect for strip armor (high status for corrosive), some give some kind of utility (knockdowns and so on), some hit like a truck (lex for example)...

Yet nowadays, if you're looking for a HIGH damage secondary (even higher than a good chunk of primaries if you have a decent build + riven mod), what you need is a kitgun, on venus.
