The grineer spy missions just seems impossible.
So I go through a door-a drone immediately spots me and I lose a vault. I go through another door-My drone attacks an enemy behind a window, triggering an alarm, failing a vault. Are these missions supposed to require 5 hours of planning, creating a map and calculated the times of everything? Or is there some random stupid thing I am missing?

Ivara Infiltrator is your friend. It really does trivialize Spy missions.

I just got to saturn. I don't have many warframes and don't have enough slots

Learn from your mistakes; surveillance drones follow a set path and have a set vision angle, and if your sentinel is shooting enemies, don't give them an attack precept if you do any Spying.

You shouldn't really be spending more than a minute or two per vault, depending on how complex they are, if you know what you're doing

The drones still are really annoying. With two they are hard to avoid and killing them from behind causes them to detect you. Are drones supposed to attack enemies through walls normally? The attack mod seems to work inconsistently, sometimes it does not shoot enemies next to you if not seen but other times they just shoot a random enemy far from you that hasn't seen you.

Saturn. It still is kinda of bad on other planets but seems worse on saturn. I also am MR4 since ranking up takes forever.

I sent you an invite if you want I can walk you through how to do it. A lot of Spy vaults are much easier once you're familiar with the layout and where you need to go, which panels to hack, etc

You can un equip your sentinels weapon if it has one and its activating/triggering the alarms by attacking enemies, at later levels the weapons sentinels use are borderline meme tier

So is it mostly just a thing you have to do repeatedly and practice-it is not just some stupid RNG?

Pretty much, as others have pointed out there's usually a gimmick to each room. An alternate path or a series of panels you need to hack. When it comes to Grineer Sensor Regulators they are avoidable and it's possible to sneak by them if you time it right.

Later on you will unlock something that makes it much easier to sneak past the mobile sensors.

As long as you are analyzing the room, shooting sensors, not walking into anything you shouldn't it definitely gets easier over time as you figure out the tricks of each vault.

Like I said feel free to accept my invite on Steam and I can show you how it's done.

Someone having trouble with spies would not have Ivara normally.

Anyway, to the OP, the trick with spy vaults is to learn the layout and take them slow. It is a good idea to setup a specific loadout for Grineer spy missions. For this loadout, it is a good idea to remove your sentinel weapon. The frame you use for this is usually best to be one that has some ability that can blind or disable enemies in the room. Excalibur is the early choice, Nyx and Ash can also work if you have them. Loki is best for Gineer till you get Ivara. Excalibur has radial blind which will blind sentry drones. Nyx can mindcontrol one of the drones at a time to ignore her, and Ash has a short duration invisibility. Having Animal Instinct on your sentinel or similar mod which has enemy radar. This will help you from walking into the middle of enemy sight.

Additionally, all the rooms usually have a way in or around most of the security if you spend the time looking at the room. One method in learning is to just go in, set off the alarm, kill everything, turn off the alarms, and explore everything you can about the room. You'll probably fail the mission, but you'll learn the room and can pass it next time. You don't need abilities or a certain frame to complete these rooms, but it does make it easier since you don't need to care about some of the mechanics.

Pretty much what everyone said. Practice practice. Learn layouts (although Jupiter one is a pain atm since they changed layout (and made everything shiny and "new" in process).I used to hate spy missions (still do) but they are a necessary evil (for Ivara parts and relics). Drones can easily be dodged if you time their patrol patterns right and check limits of their vision (ive started to not bother taking my sentinel as certain spy rooms one of the sensors/drones magically picks them up for some reason. Never used alternative routes. maybe i should check those out :)
Ciphers are a godsend especially if your doing a spy room during void fissures appearing in mission .

You're assuming that Rosalind (Sortie) doesn't exist. At any rate I mention it because it's a good goal to work towards...

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=587545211&searchtext=spy this steam guide can be quite helpful it show an alternative path you could take. If you struggle with hacking time, there is also gear you could craft. It called cipher and it automatically hack for you, BP is in the shop.
Chipers can't be used in Sorties tho!

You can also use Codex Scanners/Synthesis Scanners to detect drones through walls and doors as well as other enemies. That's usually what I use first before running into one of the Spy rooms.
Titan Jun 2, 2019 @ 8:00am
I use scanners when going through a door to check for cameras and such beforehand, and use my operator.
