Btw your whole Bloodborne comment doesn't really fit with your whole less than 3 second thing either. Every encounter in every game the Devs did (from Demon's Souls to Bloodborne and beyond) are designed to take more than 3 seconds and be deadly to the player.
Don't want to play the game when you play the game... Choose another game to "play".
it may be a boring fight but i beat him with the starter amp... so yeah, maybe prepare better for it or spend a few minutes fighting umbra... either way its a doable fight boring or not dont you like a challenge?
About the Sentients: Do the quest with the most obvious frame: Excal regular (or prime for those who has it). Excal blind--all 3 versions--stop cold those pesky sentients and leave them ready to die without becoming immune to your attacks (or just not being an issue at all). When blinded, Kill them quick with Exalted Blade (which is the most powerful melee in the game and inherently anti-sentient in all 3 versions). I assume you are too new to have your regular Excal in a position to develop him now that you gonna get Umbra, so do what you can with what you have. The quest isn't grindy or lengthy, but takes time you gonna enjoy one way or another.
About Umbra: you don't have to kill him every time you face him, just need to deplete the shields and get into him (transference). Use all you got with the operator: void more to prevent damage, void dash to escape around and even try to do some damage when dash straight to him, and void blast to try to do some more damage. The amp will be the main weapon, so try to have what you can for amp and arcanes to deplete those shields. When the prompt for use transference appears, try to be in void mode to get in, or he'll keep showing you how awesome is him and his Exalted Blade.
Sorry to say but you gonna have to do so more than once, as the quest is about that: goose chase, until the time comes that it finally becomes yours, and will become your other best friend in the game (Ordis is annoying but is your ONLY BFF before you get Umbra, and uncle Teshin is kinda distant and gives you though love. You know about Hotus by now.)
Hope this helps and GL.
I got completely rekt at the beginning but -as always- his entire battle design is rather simple, he constly tried to get into melee range and he has this one move wich always one shotted me but it has a realy long casting time wich makes it realy easy to dodge,
so all in all i just jumped around, kept my distance, and just dealt DMG when ever i saw an opening... took way too long considering how most other fights play out, and yeah i'm glad that this fight didn't involve any unneccesary invulnerability-phases, but still just a stupid beat down.. unless they changed this fight since it was added it should be still rather simple.
