i did a few missions so far with mag warframe but i feel like gameplay is lacking a solid combat system there doesnt seem to be a way to avoid incoming damage like taking cover or blocking or w/e.. feels p much like a stat game or am i missing something?

your first mistake was picking Mag, she's a horrible starter frame, she needs mods found in the later game to even be effective, and there's still better Warframes
secondly, comparing Warframe to WoW is like comparing 2 pieces of toast to a full-course breakfast meal, they're similar in concept, but how you play them is completely different

You can pull out your melee to block a percentage of the incoming damage. If you channel, it will block 100% at the cost of your energy. You can also, y'know, just go behind a crate or something.
A lot of avoiding damage is dependent on constant motion and briefly ducking behind walls to recharge shields. Each frame acts differently (Inaros and Nidus have no shields), but this is generally a good idea. Bullet-jumping is crucial to this (directionally jumping from a crouch), as is wall-running (tapping space on flat vertical surfaces). This is helpful in PvE, but crucial in PvP.

Later in the game, warframe abilities can be used very frequently, and they give you much better ways to avoid damage- but in the early game, the fact that this is a 3rd person shooter with hitscan weapons is very apparent.

Respawning enemies makes taking cover unreliable, but it's still something to take advantage of. It's also important to really get the hang of the mobility system. That takes practice, but even enemies with hit-scan weapons don't track your movements perfectly, so if you're mobile enough, you won't recieve as much damage. Once you get mods to generate energy and lower the costs of your powers, you'll also be able to give those enemies a taste of their own bullets.

Stay in motion, take cover to charge your shield and if you have hitscan weapon you can shoot behind cover without even revealing your character to the enemy.

Nope. This is not a MMO. Its a third person shooter game that happens to be group friendly and has a few quests (like, 10 or 15 each with a few parts). The quests are few and far between. One key difference is mmos typical hit on all attacks (or miss a few but you don't aim, its automatic), shooters must hit your target by aiming.

There is a lot more to it than stats. But it is more action and movement based. It is all kill based. There are similar things too ... understanding how things work to create a build that works well takes a bit of know how. There are cookie cutters here too but there are a LOT more unique setups here. Between the many, many viable weapon selections, the good # of useful mods, and the number of frames (classes, sorta?) it is hard to find 2 people just alike. There are some unpopular and less good picks, but even most of those are still viable for most content. You sure can't raid wow** in just any old gear and setup ... you can do that here, if you are good enough to make it work.

Mag isnt a tank frame, and new players don't have high ranked shield mods and armor and all that stuff to stand there taking hits. While the guy above says mag is poor as a starter, I found this to not be true and would never go back and trade her for the other starters. Pull alone can get you past many planets by outright killing everything on the screen even things you can't see hiding behind walls etc. It costs less power for its aoe size and damage than just about anything else and certainly better than anything else you can get for a while. She is good, but again, without mods she isnt going to tank.

As others said, keep moving, use cover, get some mods and learn the game. But if you wanted an MMO, you are in the wrong game.

** I left wow as they were moving from 40 man to 20 man and smaller content. I speak of the 40 man raids and difficult content that took hours of focused effort by a large, well geared group to complete.

This is a MMOTPS (Massively Multiplayer Online Third Person Shooter.) For Simplicity and to not have multiple sub genres of MMO shooter, some may simply refer to MMOTPS games as MMOFPS.
WoW is MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.)

Two seperate genres only similar in the fact that they both have grind and multiplayer.

Mag is a great frame. She is not as easy to use as she used to be, but her powers can now achive god tier DPS. I would discourage using her as a starter frame, since her skills are best used by advanced players. What I would recomend is grouping up and farming out one of the easier frames like Rhino. That frame will have skills which will make playing early levels much easier until you get mods that will enable advanced caster frames to shine.
