Well, have you watched Game Theory episode of Sonic's accutall speed? It's nowhere near the speed of sound. And about his colour, it's impossible to change it by traveling at any speed, even if you would travel in speed of light, you wouldn't change colour, so it's propably geneticall mutation, like in case of Green-rumped parrotlet, which has as well a blue variation caused by such.
Well, I guess SEGA doesn't do much science...
Anyway, here's the episode, if you want to wach it.

I was actually quoting from his canon origin story. Sonic was originally a more hedgehog-esque humanoid creature until he met Dr. Ovi Kintobor, who was working on a machine to harness the chaos emeralds to bring peace to Mobius. Since Kintober was a bit of a mad scientist he had a variety of experiments, and one was a pair of red sneakers designed to help people run faster. He gave these to Sonic, who was already reknowned for being a fast runner, and put him in a giant hamster wheel to see how fast he could run. When Sonic hit the speed of sound, the machine overloaded and exploded, and in the process, caused Sonic to have the blue streamlined design we recognise him by.
Whilst such things are obvious nonesence in the real world, what with physics, chemistry and biology being a thing, in the video game world this is simply how it happened, and since Sonic and Volt both exists in video games and do not operate on the rules of reality, it is simply the case that Sonic can run at and in excess of the speed of sound. There have been cases in the past where he's even hit the speed of light, albeit for short bursts, so by video game rules, Sonic can run significantly faster than Volt.
So more Sonic trivia. In Sonic CD, one of the main mechanics is Sonic's ability to travel backwards and forwards in time. Not only that, but the power 'chaos control' that he learned from Shadow effectively stops time for everything except the user, so Limbo has no advantage over Sonic at all.
Yeah, but, if I know it correctly, Sonic needs those chaos crystalls to use those powers, while Limbo can allways use them, if he got enough energy, which is very easly regenerated.
