How does multiplayer work?

I've introduced my best friend to this game after playing it alone and seeing people mentioning playing with their friends, but i can't figure out how to start a save file with them? Am i insane and did i make it up or is there actually a way to play with others?

Here's how they do it:
Step 1: Invite your friend to your house.
Step 2: Begin playing the game.
Step 3: When you encounter an unknown word, ask you friend their opinion.
If the steps above don't work, it means that you don't have any friends.
