There are actually 3 portals in the first area. The last one is in the upper left if you're looking towards the unreachable room. You have to go through an opening covered with cloth.

edit: Also there's a note with a hint for the puzzle with portals if you go up the stairs then right and all the way back along the wall. It's next to a pile of rocks.

What I want to know is what does the switch next to the portal in the final room do? I know it changes the colour of the portal but didn't see any other changes.

the key to the room was talking to the rats... ice earth fire nature. after you go thru the portals in the correct order they turn green. look at the floor surrounding the portals. The ice and fire are in the first room the earth is in the second. its the one that looks like it is all under ground. the portal with the cloth hanging in front of it is the last portal you will go thru that puts you in the room down below. The book you find really doesnt help much... didnt help me anyway

the switch by the last portal turns off the puzzle so the portal you always ended up at goes straight to the ending room

You could just explore the area and find an old note with the hint/solution to the puzzle... ;)

@bcleavelin: the note made sense to me. You have 3 states connected with the matter surrounding the portals in the first area: fire - hot, snow - cold, water - wet.

For the portals in the second area: waterfall - wet, gears - made out of metal - bronze is a metal, the portal connected to the mountain is standing next to a stony mountain.

So in the order of the hints: Brr! = cold - snow, mountain - the portal with the massive rock behind it,*pant* - you're panting when you're hot - fire portal, waterfall - the portal with the waterfall behind it, obviously, mop = wet since it has to be wet for you to wash floors with it, bronze - portal with the gears behind it since they're made out of metal, most likely bronze.

The fact that one of the portals is hiden by a pice of cloth, which you never encounter in the game until this once can be frustrating. That is kind of poor design
