Try starting the game directly from the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' program file, by right clicking and running as administrator.
You could also try right clicking, selecting Properties, switching to the Compatibility tab and set the game to run in Win 7 mode, or something.
The exception code c0000005 is a memory access violation, but there are a variety of possible causes.
Try re-installing the support packages for the game (from the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\_CommonRedist' folder). One person with a relatively new Win 8 system got this error due to not having DirectX 9c installed (it is not installed by default, and Steam didn't install it, as it should have, when installing and re-installing the game).
There are a couple of system related issues that can cause that exception code, but if you are only having a problem with D:OS they probably are not the most likely causes.
Try checking your system files:
- press WinKey-X and select Command Prompt (Admin). Alternately, click Start, type cmd into the search box, right click the program and run as administrator.
- type the following command and hit Enter
sfc /scannow
When that is done, type exit and hit Enter, then reboot your computer.
You can try testing your RAM, though if only D:OS is crashing and other, similarly demanding DirectX games are ok, it probably isn't a hardware issue. You can use the Windows Memory Diagnostic program or (much more thorough) Memtest86.

Especially if you have a relatively high desktop resolution, you can try temporarily lowering it, to limit what the game will auto-detect. One person had the game crash with a desktop resolution of 3840x2160, for example, but it was fine at 2560x1440 (and once it loaded and created the configuration file, they could switch their desktop resolution back).
Another found that after lowering the desktop resolution to get the game started, with V-sync disabled they could raise the game resolution back to the original 3824x2160 resolution.
If there is any loading time before the game crashes, try Alt-Tabbing away from the game and see if that avoids the crash. If so, you may be able to switch back to the game once it loads.

- check if you meet the minimum requirements for the game
- check if you have a sound device (one that has uptodate drivers and is visible in dxdiag.txt. If you have a sound device but its name and drivers end up empty in dxdiag, it is likely the game will not start up. >>> Reinstall sound drivers)
- some people have reported uninstalling AMD Gaming evolved (raptr) fixes crashing on startup. Control panel > programs and features > uninstall raptr software.
Disable cloud support, either globally (in the client click on the Steam menu and select Settings, and then Cloud) or just for this game (in the library right click Divinity: Original Sin and select Properties, then switch to the Updates tab and check the Steam Cloud section).
After that, try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and delete the 'Divinity Original Sin' subfolder (assuming the game is getting far enough to have created it).
This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Normally I would suggest renaming the folder for troubleshooting purposes, but if you don't have any saved games that isn't an issue.
Next, extract the D:OS folder from the download below into your '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder, and see if that will let you start the game (it may help if the problem is in setting up the initial My Documents folder and configuration files).

The graphicSettings.lsx can be edited to manually set the game resolution and display mode (the one in the download above set to 1152x648 resolution, windowed mode), or if the included file lets you start the game, you can change that (and quality settings) in the Video options. If that doesn't help, you can delete the downloaded My Documents D:OS folder.

Start-up directly ..\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' as you suggested with compatibility to Windows 7 and Administrator rights.
Worked.
Then removes the compatibility & administrator rights and still worked.
Also worked with the normal shortcut.
My guess is Administrator needed to change a regkey or something?

- click Start (or WinKey-R or WinKey-W in Win 8), then type "event viewer" into the search box. in Windows 10, 'event' should bring up 'View event logs'.
- after starting the Event Viewer, expand 'Windows Logs' in the left column and select 'Application'
- in the center column, look for a recent error (maybe sort by Date and Time) for the game
- check the information under the 'General' tab below the list of events, starting with "Faulting application name..."
