Though their soft and slow songs are nice and peaceful.
I got the impression that it just cycled through a few available tracks as there really didn't seem to be any link between what was playing and what was happening in the game at that moment. That said, I turned the volume down quite a bit after a short time because (for me) the tune became tiring and repetitive. I didn't mute it entirely, but I did want it banished to the (extreme) background. So, I may have missed something.
The final music will be done by an orchestra, so don't fear, the music is currently just as a placeholder.
Because if it's the latter, that's not really going to change the complaint. It's still going to be the same ill-fitting music, but with an orchestral treatment. In other words, if the song "What is Love (Baby Don't Hurt Me)" was playing in the background while I was exploring the game world, calling it a placeholder and then playing a version performed by an orchestra isn't going to address the complaint.
But dont worry... it will all change, music is still being added, recorded, made, layers added. This is just P1 music.. a skeleton compared to when they go to P2
These parts usually will still be in the game, except changed and layers added so much that its much more suitable for the game.. aside from that a massive amount of sounds/music will be added.
Do realise that most music also is not yet in the place its supposed to be :P
Background music definitely does change in different areas of the game.
There currently is a really annoying bug where two music tracks play at the same time when you're in combat.
I like the music of the game, and don't agree that it should be changed to something more "fantasy" like that sounds the same as every other fantasy RPG. Each game world should have its own feel to it, and insisting that every fantasy game have the exact same style of music leads to stagnation and unremarkable, unmemorable music.
I like the Inn music a lot, but agree that it doesn't fit in that location.
At the same time, don't be different just for the sake of being different.
The thing about the type of music you hear in typical fantasy films and games is that it appeals to a wider audience. It's mood setting and lends itself well to establishing a particular atmosphere. Sure, you can opt to pair your fantasy game with hard rock, techno, jazz, or country music.. but you run the risk of driving many players towards turning it off because those are very specific sounds, and everyone has different tastes.
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have enjoyed the Lord of the Rings films as much had it been paired with, say, rave music. And I honestly don't feel like the soundtrack for those films was either unremarkable or unmemorable, despite being classic fantasy. Quite the opposite, actually. You don't always have to take a wildly different path to deliver good music.
