A Mysterious Murder

So I arrested Esmerelda for this quest, and Aureus told me to go talk to her in her prison cell, but earlier in the game she fought me for breaking into her room, and now when i go try to talk to her in jail, she just sits there like she wants to fight me.

What do i do? Did i break the quest?

Maybe if you give gold to her she'll change her attitude towards you. Try to talk to her with your most charismatic character from the 2 main. Hope it helps-

The thing is, when i hover my mouse over her, it's red and a sword icon appears as if i am attacking her, there's literally no way to speak to her.

Uhmm. Maybe because you got your sword on?
Maybe Im wrong, but who knows.
Try to do it anyways. Dont save later if you fight though.

If it doesnt work and nobody knows how to help you, try to post this in the bug section.


I think you can however continue the game without any problem. I dont remember talking to her was necessary at all. Maybe its not even broken and thats how the things turnned up because of your decision to broke into her room and fight her and the game adapted to it, who knows.

If one of your main characters has Pet Pal, talk to Murphy in the graveyard for an alternate way to do the quest.

If Esmeralda's trade function wasn't disabled when he is thrown in jail you might have been able to talk to her with a henchmen, and bribe her enough that she would talk to the main characters.

If all else fails, you can just break into Evelyn's house just west of the clinic, though that bypasses a couple steps and a bit of experience.

Once you find out the real murderer, you can just tell it to Aureus, who'll then proceed to free Esmeralda. If you watch the scene in the jail after that, she'll get back to her shop and will not be hostile towards you anymore.

It's not really a good idea to bribe a merchant, by the time you're at the end of Act I the only merchant you'll ever use is the Teller of Secrets. It costs 10 times as much to bribe her and isn't necessary, just get to 3 bartering and 3 charisma, make that 6 and 4 with 2 legendaries that happened to add bartering and conversation traits and you should only need about 7 or so reputation to buy and sell everything at cost everywhere. At that point 20k gold for four skill point books makes up for the 12 skill points you spent. The books reset either every level or every four hours you play, whichever comes first.

See, another way to look at it, what's awesome is I did this quest completely differently, barely even speaking to Esmeralda or using pet pal. This game is great...

She's necessary to advance the quest once and once only, yes. And the person she leads you toward isn't the real murderer either. Murphy the dog is quite wrong about who killed Jake.
