How to get evelyn to leave?
I have been combing through guides, they all say to complete the councilers wife quest, and then evelyn leaves and you search her backpack. Except, she doesn't leave. She is there, and there is no way to denounce her. IDK what to do. I have even restarted the game from scratch and have the same issue.

The first game, I did the sheep quest line before I talked to the mortician. Then he was arrested before I could extract information from him OR talk to him about the sheep quest because i told the captain about the body being missing.

This game I completed the sheep quest and completed the councilors wife, but eve is still there. This seems like a good game but I'm really frustrated with it.

It was just a lucky chance that I was able to do so, but I finally got it. since my knight won the arguement over my rogue in the dialogue in the option to have evelyn arrested, I was able to talk to her after the quest to get her to denounce evelyn. I have to say this games quest are not very robust and can be derailed very easily if you do the wrong thing. If I had had esmeralda arrested I would have once again not been able to complete the quest, as nobody on the internet seems to know where the bloody scarf is.

While it has been too long to remember the exact sequence, I can tell you one thing: when in doubt of the next step, talk to EVERY NPC pertinent to your quest so far and go through every dialogue option, again. (It's easy, just go to the Captain/Arhu/Esmeralda/Thelyron/etc and spam 1.) If/when you see a journal update prompt, you can go back to your journal's dialogue tab and skim through the text for your necessary information.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Watch a Let's Play or something, maybe, since it won't be required to be as succinct (ergo, lacking the exact information you need) due to it needing to be compacted into a quick-read, bullet-point text format for the A.D.D.-affected.

Also, the quests aren't necessarily derailed, as you put it, especially in the circumstance of a key storyline quest. What you would have done is perhaps exhaust one potential solution (as there are many solutions to many quests, not just one; your quest most certainly would not be hanging had you lost the game of rock, paper, scissors). Have you searched Esmeralda's basement and belongings? You ought to do that if you haven't. She is a primary suspect, after all.

In 5 plays through the game I never had a problem with it.

-get the love letter out of the chest at the murder scene
-get the bloody knife out of Esmerelda's basement
-get the book "How to commit the perfect murder" out of Esmerelda's basement

Pick the conversation options with Esmerelda relating to each of those 3 items.

That's it. It makes no difference how you deal with the mortician.

Well the problem is that you can have evelyn arrested without doing that. I think I did the first 2 thinking it was flavor text and then went straight to the captain, never knowing i was sealing the quest line by doing so. And the mortician is at least needed for the sheep quest to be completed.

I think you're confusing Esmeralda with Evelyn. The wife is Esmeralda. You can get her arrested, not Evelyn. If you do get the wife arrested, you may have to break into Evelyn's house, or have Pet Pal and pickpocket the scarf off her or steal her other item of clothing from one of the dressers in the room where the patients were and take one of those to the dog.

Esmeralda getting arrested doesn't derail the quest. It's an obvious possibility, after all.

You don't need to finish the sheep quest.

You seem to be focused on the idea that if you don't finish a quest there's something wrong with the game.

The game is in fact designed such that the decisions you make can result in quests becoming impossible to complete. They will then sit in your quest log forever reminding you of your failure.

And that's ok.

Since quests can be marked as failed, it's probably an oversight if it becomes impossible to finish and doesn't get marked that way.
