Tough category, this. A few games that come into mind aren't very good on the RPG scale but then a CRPG with co-op elements is a new wrinkle for me. These somewhat fit the category of action rpgs and as such the plot is about as throwaway (can't really say OS's is any better) but less involved. So here are a few games that matches the categories:

Borderland series (♥♥♥♥ rpg but fun co-op)
Diablo 3 (♥♥♥♥ rpg but fun combat single or MMO)
Path Of Exile (Diablo 2 on steroids and continuously being updated, compeltely free)
Torchling 2 (Like above has the original diablo style hack and slash but more cartoonish)

Try at your own risk:
Grimm Dawn
Guild Wars 2 (mmo)

I am quite sure I am going to catch a lot of flack for the labeling but none of them really do anything different than MMOs and mostly banks on the endgame content and the need for continually farming for better stuff with friends. Technicality aside, these are also titles I did much rather sample for an hour two during downtime rather than focus wholesale as a game with progression and an end.

We might try Path Of Exile. Thanks!

Yeah I remmeber when Diablo 3 was a total dissapointment, POE was what satisfied the cravings. Don't let that skill tree overwhelm you cause its huge but most of the nodes are basic attribute PTs that we tend to slot in most other games. Over here you need to map out a path and try to get those big slots with multiple bonuses for your char. Careful though, this is a grindy and heavy loot dependent game.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 1 and 2.

Most Isometric(top down view) ARPGs with a multiplayer component could probably work, but from my experience, the "coop" part has much less impact compared to D:OS.

I guess this is largely due to combat being in real time in most games, and combat being a solo experience(but with help from friends), rather than actual coop where you have to constantly work together.

And there are not a whole lot of turn-based combat ARPGs out there with Coop options. Would be awesome though.

Guild Wars was the greatest co-op RPG.

Was.

RIP in pieces Guild Wars. (You can still play but, heroes+henchies on a dead game is not so much "co-op" anymore; then again, it does make the truly challenging content infinitely more difficult).

Grim Dawn isn't really a risk it's a great game I've actually played it more than Divinity: Original Sin which won game of the year which I had been having a great time playing up until I bought the latter and completely got drawn into. Yes the game is early access it needs optimizations to be done and content finished up on for end game along with mod tools later, but it's still very playable in it's current state and will improve a lot over the coming year.

They all ready have 2 new classes planned which means a lot more hybrid classes as well. The dual class skill tree system makes the game into almost a MOBA like ARPG in terms of class diversity. In fact if online player count were increased I could easily see modding turning the game into a MOBA it's easily got the potential to be made into one depending on capabilities of modding tools.

I find co-op to be my favored way to play Grim Dawn ARPG it's got a lot of cc, aoe debuffs, and group buffs which really work as incentives for team play it's still a solo friendly game and difficulty scales with players, but you gain more versatility with players and good build synergies will make it more effective as well.

I actually haven't tried D:OS in co-op yet is the funny part despite the fact that a lot of people clamor over it the reason being is you have more control over the story and game play in single player. I do know D:OS provides a interesting Co-Op experience though especially from a RP standpoint you'll never know quite what to expect so it'll play a bit different each time around depending on how players decide to play the game itself.

The original Guild Wars was ridicilously easy though. I don't recall ever having difficulty with anything that happened across all the campaigns with the exception maybe of the Factions and Prophecies final battle.

Of course Hard Mode spiced things up a bit, but unfortunately it requires you to complete the entire campaign first which is a big shame. Who wants to re-do a campaign just so things can be a little bit more challenging?

Fair enough. I don't have any personal expreince in those two games listed so I can't really give any opinions. All I know is POE and D3 are about as far I want to go with enldess loot grind games with MMO aspects. I like my games to have an end so I can move on to something new.

Souls series (Demon Souls, Dark Souls: PTE, Dark Souls II, Dark Souls II SoTFS), Durr hurr hurr. Very unique multiplayer feature. Not recommended if you aren't prepared to get your ass handed to you on a silver platter.

No, just no.

but summoning in Dork souls is temp and at best random right? I never quite used that feature... probably why it was one of the most infuriating expereinces as a dual weild. You are so screwed without a shield of any kind.
Reeno Jan 21, 2015 @ 8:40pm
Diablo 2 is still amazing, just don't play it on b.net because it's full of bots and spambots that flood the chat.
