rivellon: worlds within worlds?
original sin is the first larian studios game i've played, and i'm loving it, but i have a question: while set in rivellon, are these games merely set in different regions and/or timelines, or do any of the games take place in smaller parts of the larger world of rivellon as seen in other games?

All the games are in the same timeline, but do not share very much geography. D:OS is set before the other Divinity RPGs, with no overlap. Divine Divinity was made first; Beyond Divinity was not set in Rivellon, for the most part, with only limited visits to select locations from DD. Divinity 2 was set pretty close to DD geographically, but the only real location they shared (Aleroth) changed quite a bit in the intervening 70 odd years (a hamlet of healers to a city).

this is great, thanks! i'm excited to play more of your games either way. the subject came up when a facebook friend was asking specifically about games that do the opposite of diablo 2's expansion of scope, or zelda 2's revelation that the first zelda was set in a small mountain range in the southwest of the much vaster hyrule. something more like wizardry 4, where you play as werdna, or maybe the later elder scrolls games which are so much smaller than daggerfall, while considered a part of its world.

anyway, i wanted to ask about rivellon because original sin is such a huge, inviting game.

p.s. i am enjoying all the achievements with names taken from songs by dio, black sabbath, etc.

I am guessing Original Sin set somewhere between Divine Devinity and Divinity 2. One of the clues lies with a random sword you may get which alludes to an endgame weapon you fight in Divnity 2. The description says its only sword to have traveled back in time. The other reason is in the original game the ORCs and other races were mostly at peace and a silent war broke out. Most of the following games seem to be set in the political climate where Orcs, goblins and other creatures were no longer at peace. Other than that most games are on a different time frame continuing the lore. This is just stipulation though so... also I didnt notice Raze commented. Best defer to him then.

It was my understanding that D:OS was a prequel to all the other Divinity games, is this not correct?

But according to OS, it doesn't seem like they were ever at peace with the Orcs like before. In Divine Divinity its mentioned that the Orcs attacking was a strange occurance along with the taint of the source. Seemed like a new thing for the area and at the end none of the conflicts were resolved. If anything it laid the foundation for warring factions and the like. To me it seemed like OS pretty much paints the Orcs and goblins as enemies outright by the nature of it, this war has been happening for a while. Then there is this sword that points to Divinity 2.

There is a timeline given in this Kickstarter update:

D:OS is set 1200 years before Divine Divinity.

Isn't Divinity 2 and Divinity Original Sin the same game?
