Just my 2¢. I definitely understand where you're coming from though, it's one of those things we've grown accustomed to expecting in these types of (gross generalizations abound) games.
That doesn't really address the ops request to have "ground items" always shown, like when you press ALT. It's not an unreasonable request or expectation since ALT is already in the game.
I would rather see ALT as a toggle for this type of feature.

easy way to put always on.
switching to the map did not work for me.
But what did is:
hold alt -> channel any spell -> cancel spell (rightclick) -> release alt > item highlighting remains
it does not seems to be 100% reliable though
(play around with switching to map and spell - this seems to glitch the highlighting out somehow)
