Playing with a person on GOG version?
Is it possible to play the game with someone who has a stand alone or GOG version of the game if I bought mine on steam? Maybe a silly question with an obvious answer but i"d just like to make sure.

Well dudes from GOG told that it will be possible after they release they "Galaxy" platform
You can play together, but you won't be able to see the other's game in the online lobby browser. You can connect using LAN, or direct connect to the server's ID (can be seen in the ingame multiplayer menu) or IP.

I'm not certain whether Larian will host its own independent matchmaking service like they eventually did with Dragon Commander, but even without that, GoG Galaxy should solve the problem when it comes out.

I think I remember them saying that they are doing this?

wow this is kinda disappointing, aside from GOG Galaxy. I didn't know about that. CDProjekt Red is one of my favorite developers out there =)

You can (with Direct IP connection)

My bad I missed the post stating that Direct IP connect works.
Glad i come across this, was looking to change my kickstarter redemption to gog but wanted to still be able to play with my friend who bought it early access, guess this answer that. Though to clarify are you saying that gog galaxy is going to be able to connect and show you games from steam? that so doesn't sound like something steam would allow.

I don't know how it will work technically, but their statement was that yes, GoG and Steam players will be able to cross-connect for multiplayer.

Actually, that's exactly why Valve is seen as not being an evil entity. They do allow things like that. Hell, there are whole business that compet with Valve because Valve allows it (all those steam keys you buy from everywhere that's not steam run very profitable businesses because because Valve allows it). At the end of the day people are playing games and Valve benefits by people doing that. Shutting down the online part of their service so that other games not bought on Steam won't work goes against their business model of people playing games and continue being consumers.
oh hell, thats good. I prefer GOG, then steam
Steam is seen as an evil entity to those who they have stolen games from with no recource or appeals, or those whose entire accounts have been stolen with not being told why and no appeals. Read their tos, they can ban your account for any reason they want and they don't have to tell you why and have no appeals even if you know why.
