Divinity: Original Sin (Classic)

Divinity: Original Sin (Classic)

Statistiche:
The violin synth they use for the start screen music always creeps me out
The way it distorts when it pitches up makes my skin crawl.

Bravo Larian.

Let me guess, you still don't like this game do you Magic Man.
Messaggio originale di Pinard:
A real orchestra may have made the soundtrack more generic. What's I've heard so far is less "epic" orchestra and more new-age/atmospheric. It actually fits quite well aside from a few tracks (the inn music is kinda crazy for inn music)

More generic maybe. But I don't think if would be generic compared to other fantasy games.

The Divinity Games had always it's own style (or better Kirill pokrovskys style).
He seems to like Russian inspired classical music (he's Russian so no surprise) and new age stuff.
But he also has made metal music.

Here is his website where you find (legal and free) download of some of his stuff (including his Divinity Music).

I guess what I"m saying is the way he writes now is so atmospheric that a REAL orchestra would be a waste of money. He never directly features a group of instruments like strings or brass. He instead actually does a lot of sound design with basic instruments, creating new sounds by adding effects, reversing the audio, etc.. From what I've heard on the beta soundtrack on youtube that was posted by a random user (yeah I know, could be fake but I doubt it) is quite amazing (there are some tracks that sound unfinished though). There is even a Duduk performance that was so good, that the YouTube video Content ID matched to Dijan Gasparyan. That's the man that played the Duduk in the Gladiator soundtrack, and it DID sound like him.

I haven't heard it in the game though, does anyone know where this track comes from? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBBq7-5X27A#

That was one of the two original main menu songs.

That's a good point.

I love that the music does really stand out compared to pretty much every other RPG out there.

It's actually really sad that so many big budget games (not only RPG) limit themselves by emulating the generic Action Movie Blockbuster Style (the same goes for Story and Cinematic Feeling of most games).

I think i am the only one who is glad that the last update removed the main menu music because i absoluty hated it :D

On the other side, the ingame soundtracks are absoluty stunning. I just love the ones where a woman is chanting

As a game composer myself, I can tell you it's possible to get the best of both worlds. The trick with composing game music is writing something that is both enjoyable to listen to, but also not entirely distracting. The Divinity track does this pretty well. It's long, not entirely complicated but still has peaks and valley where things "swell" and go back down to an atmospheric type score. Much like Mark Morgan or Jeremy Soule. But some games do call for an action blockbuster sound. It's just hard to sync the music as if it's a film (even with adaptable music like Deus Ex HR, which suffered as a result)

I'll take something that adapts over the same ambient noise repeating every 5 minutes any day.
