Slain White Stag "Mysterious Friend?" *SPOILERS*
So in Hiberheim I ran across the Slain White Stag, killed the wolves, and then my characters talked as though they have met this stag before.

Chatlog in the picture:

Except I've never met any White Stags, so I'm puzzled how my characters know he is mysterious, and why they regard him as a friend.

For reference, my journey to this point consisted of:
Cyseal - full clear
Lucalla - hut, scroll, back to hut, cave, pool
Hiberheim - pool, cave, exit to Hiberheim, White Stag

So did I sequence break? Should I have met this White Stag beforehand somewhere?

I did all of lucalla before realising the hut lead to its' own zone, and still never encountered the stag before that beffudling moment. It's either an error or extremely easy to sequence break.

Yeah I've played through that twice and I have no idea who he is.

Good to know I'm not going crazy thinking I should know WTH was going on there then.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has actually met this White Stag while he was living.

yeah, i had no cllue what was going on....anyone else know where you can meet it before hiberheim?

the preceding encounter is either scrapped, or extremely obscure. There are other instances where certain actions can be done out of the intended order, but the dialogue and journal updates don't change, which makes it confusing.

Yup, I just hat this happen to me too. And I've had Pet Pal since I started the game so I'm fairly sure I've not missed an animal interaction along the way.

Me too. Weird moment of deja vu!
I'm not sure how far you are in the game, but your characters are quite a bit more important than just Source Hunters, as you will discover. Many things know and recognize you, but you don't recall them (the characters I mean).

Yes we know but the point is that your characters react as if they know the Stag and you don't. It's not the stag recognising you as othre entities have, it's your own oblivious Source Hunters suddenly knowing a stag they've never met before that point.

I seem to recall having read a book about the stag before encountering it, but maybe I'm going crazy.

Did this today and thought exactly the same, thought I was cracking up. Relieved.
The stag is no normal stag. It's a sort of...mythological creature so to speak. Aka a "divine" creature. Everyone knows the White Stag.

It's a reference to this I believe:

Again, we (or at least I) know that but our characters react to this stag as if they know it personally, not just as if they'd found the corpse of a mythological figure.

I've kind of come around to the thought that this is probably based on world lore that the player isn't privy to. That everyone in Rivellon has heard stories of the White Stag and its doings (friendly yet mysterious) since they were children, etc... Somewhat similar to Puck in early modern (late 1400s forward) England. So the moment the main characters find the White Stag they immediately recognize it as such since as far as their presumed folklore goes there is only one white stag and it is THE White Stag of lore.

The reaction of the second player charater does seem quite a bit more personal than that though, so I could be totally wrong. :P Until Larian chooses to enlighten us it's hard to say.

I believe the White Stag may have been a scrpped encounter. A youtube I watch OMFGcata aka Jesse Cox did a video on this game when it was ina boothe at a convention, he mentioned something along the lines of being in the wilderness (now assumed to be Cysle(?)) and slaying a white stag where the devs supervising him said "That was a quest giver"
