I've played with the graphics settings a lot. Sometimes it'll be quiet and then all of the sudden the screen goes blue and the fans sound incredibly loud... like engine loud and the computer needs to be shut off.
Sometimes it'll be a constant whirrr thats louder than usual leading to an alert popping up on my screen telling me to do something to stop the processor from overheating (Alt + F4)
Sometimes the game will drop to like 10fps and be unplayable.
I don't even think the Graphic options do much of anything, the stuttering is still apalling in the main world no matter what settings I drop it to.
I know games that run a ludicrous FPS can cause problems with overheating so I tried capping it to 50 at first then to 30 and neither helped :(
Edit: It could also be that your CPU cooler is not properly attached or that you don't have any fans in your case.
But it doesn't do this for any other game. Any reason why this game is causing my computers graphics card to overheat compared to Ass Creed IV, Crysis, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Metro Last Light or Wolfenstein which are all running at either max settings or near max settings when this game causes my card to go into meltdown on medium?
The fan is properly attached, I check the internals of my machine once a month to make sure everything is clean and working a-okie. The proccesor typically doesn't suffer from overheating issues. The case doesn't have fans, it's something I need to invest in and it's becoming increasingly clear with this game, but I don't understand why this game in particular seems to be causing me so much grief and if it's widespread.
Edit: I actually had a look around after I posted this and it does seem to be quite common, I might disable texture streaming in the ini files and see if that helps as some people seem to have fixed perfomance issues by doing this.
I had a similar issue with Tomb Raider while other games like Witcher 2 and Far Cry 3 ran fine.
I immediately suspected heat, but I had cleaned out my PC recently. One time I ran the game and held my hand by the exhaust of my video card, and it was hot as hell. Cracked open my video card, and found a mat of dust along the air intake about a 1/2 inch thick, that I couldn't see just by looking at my video card (580)... removed that and never had an issue again.
So, if you are comfortable cracking open your video card to look under the casing, I'd give that a shot. Just be aware, you are probably negating your warranty if you do that.
Thanks :) I mean I wouldn't put that out of the realms of possibility, I will give it a shot. I'm not too confident doing it myself but will probably inlist my local computer shop to do so. Still bambozzled at it overheating on the lower settings though :)
Download something like HWMonitor Pro and watch your CPU/GPU temps while playing.
You would be amazed how much crap can get in there in a short period of time. And any area covered on a heat exchanger is going to perform less than ideally. This is kind of my new soap-box, clean your stuff out once a year.
The game always runs at a solid 60 FPS (capped) for me, even with all the heat and high GPU usage, so I keep the option on anyway since upper 60 temps are pretty much normal high load temps for my card (GTX 660), so it's nothing dangerous.
Case fans generally arent going too do much unless you have serious air flow issues.
If its your CPU, then by a new fan, you can get amazing ones that can drop you 15-20 degrees vs stock for 30-40$
If its your GPU, you're in a tougher spot. I'd say just take the side off your case, and test the temps that way.
Or you can always underclock/undervolt the card...but honestly, a cheap box fan and the side of your case off is the easiest solution.
You cant really get a different GPU fan, so you're looking at watercooling...which is a great solution now a days, but requires some knowledge and not recommended if you arent experienced with computers..
This, i had this problem with counter strike, without the limmiter the computer just chug out 400-800 fps and made my card and cpu to overheat. Limit the fps to the max you monitor allows
clean your pc out...get a liquid cooler for your cpu....clean your video card out...dust can cause serious issues
i7 3770k, 16gb ram, 680 4gb card, win7 x64 pro...no worries here at all.
Your computer overheating has nothing to do with the game's "optimization" - your computer needs either better cooling, clean out any dust, your videocard is faulty or needs better cooling, the list goes on...
I've just started playing this game and it's no where near as taxing on my system like other recently played games with maxed out settings have been and I have both my 3570K and R9 280X overclocked.
Proper cooling is key.
