Why is this game starting so slow and (mostly) boring?
I really wonder why they put the 10+ hour city point & click adventure that mostly takes running from one NPC to the other and stealing stuff right at the beginning. I was close to being bored with this game until I finally ventured through the gates.

And now the game is SO MUCH FUN. I so love turn based combat like in the old days. It's just a shame that I was so close to stop playing because this lame beginning.

I wonder why they made it this way.

Well, it's a bit optional. I did a grand total of 0 quests before I was out of the gates, chopping down zombies. Did a bunch at level 10 before going to the next area. But yes, the best aspects of the game is definitely the combat system.
I find the city point to be a great deal of fun. I love the investigative aspect of the game of searching for clues and solving a mystery.

They have clearly made an effort to make this game appealing on multiple layers.

Some people might just want combat... but this game is more than that.
Have to agree , Fantastic game but MORONIC choice by the devs to start your adventure playing detective nerd burgalar for 10 hours. I also was almost ready to quit last night until i stepped out of the gates and started tactical combat.

CRAFTING ,COMBAT,AMBIENCE 10/10
STORY,TEXT NERD BURGERLARING AND DETECTIVE WORK 1/10

That's weird, I went straight into combat and after 15 hours of combat, only then did I stop and began doing the quests. Sounds like you have only yourself to blame :)

This I can agree with. I enjoyed the storyline in town... but it was over in 2 hours. Not sure what the OP was doing in Cyseal for 10 hours.

Sigh, but you should have explored the underground a long before 10 hours, and get a few combats in the middle. Also you can leave before have finished all stuff in town.

Sigh, you clearly rush through, and didn't done all the stuff. But that's what I wrote above, no need dig fully the town before do some more combats.

They made it that way mainly because they claim right from the start their will to come up with an old school CRPG ! When not everything was about bashing the living ♥♥♥♥ outta everything that moves ... I personnaly enjoyed Cyseal and the investigations. It progressively get you going with the story, not to mention helps gearing a little bit before venturing out the gates ;)
Well I tried to explore the city on my own, without any guides. This takes a while because some quests rely on keys or special items, that you have to find. If you do not find them, you are screwed. Furthermore the 10+ hours included a restart for new characters and getting used to the general game.

I wouldn't mind "the city" as a part of the game. But it should be later in the game. I love doing some combat, then switch to quests, stealing stuff, combat etc. But the game forces you to skip combat for the whole beginning period. There is no variety.

@Wanpanman, I didn't know that you can go to combat right away. I will try this next time.

Oh, and I am pretty sure I so I know what it means to play a classic RPG, I started back in the days with Ultima IV and Bards Tale. People have the tendency to kill every criticism in this forum with the argument "because it's such an oldschool game".

the game doesnt force you to do any such thing, i walked right through the city and out the north gate. been bouncing back and forth between combat, selling, exploring the city and doing the quests ever since
This is kind of bothering me as well. Gonna be hard for me to play this game again when the beginning is so slow. It's been 10 hours of nothing but running around stealing stuff and talking to people in this city, and 1 hour of combat so far.

I've played fallout 1-2, and baldur's gate. None of them started out this slow. Not even the beginning of fallout 2 was this slow.

Being old school doesn't mean it has to have 10 hours of nothing but running around at the start of the game. The beginning simply has no combat breaks once you get in the first town, other than under the town, but that lasts for like 10 minutes at best and you're only going to find that hole after you've explored most of it already.
Because it's not diablo and it tries to tell some good stories ;-)

You can tell a good story in under 10 hours, espcially a intro story lol
10h in Cyseal ? Oh boy, what the hell ? Did you spend your time stealing cheese and painting ? D:

Hmm ... Or perhaps ... Hugh, did you notice there is nothing stopping you to go outside town ? Hmm. You're all going "spend 10h in Cyseal" ... Well, you do what you want buddy. During my 1st game i spent only 2h in Cyseal. During the second, less than 1h.

Sooo ... Erm. Was the cheese good ?
He was probably having so much fun exploring Cyseal he didn't realize he was there for 10 hours. Shame on Larian. Same thing happened to me as well during my first playthrough of the Beta.

On my 2nd playthrough, I literally just recruited Jahan and Madora talked to a few Key NPC's then went straight out the NW gates and wrecked havoc.
Im a bit OCD , So i felt /feel compelled to solve this murder thingy before moving on....
