Any way to reassign the "main character"?
So, in my party, I've got two characters. One of them has a whole bunch of points sunk into Charisma, Politician, and so on. However, in certain automatically-starting conversations (such as the ones at the End of Time portal when I pick up a new Star Stone), my other party member with pretty much nonexistent charisma is automatically the one who does the talking.

Normally it's not that problematic, since the EoT conversations don't have any diplomacy checks, but then it also happened during my conversation with the Immaculates at the unnamed lava-ruin place, which would have been major trouble if the RNG hadn't been on my side. So now I'm kind of nervous about it, and therefore wondering: is there any way to reassign who the "main character" is, or am I stuck until my second playthrough?

yeah there is, but really late in game
The person that speaks is the one that is closest to the person you are speaking to, that's how it's been for me and my mate. Other than that you can drag around the order of the characters via the the icons on the left, as well as highlight who you want to control.

So the best thing would be to control the speaker, and have him or her in front. That way he or she will be the one to converse.
Arteas: Alright, thanks.
Piknim: That's the case with most conversations, but my issue is that there are certain ones which default to a specific party-member regardless of who's in front.
I have never had that issue:/
Try dragging the character portraits to the left, it might make the top one the leader. Not sure though.
I'm not sure how they pick the "main" when I started my game, I made a Red head archer in the I slot, and a dark haired cleric in slot II, when I got in the game, the cleric was "first" and the archer was second.. I save about every 5min (or after i find good loot), if i run in to a convo that talks to a toon that ends up on a rock paper scissors game and the numbers are way off, i reload and only take my main in, its alittle hassle, but it works
nah, its not Leader, its more like "1st and 2nd are front line, 3rd and 4th are back line" in most tactics

Well I wouldn't know, I'm playing with a friend and we're only playing with 2 characters so formation doubly doesn't matter. For us it's simply auto-conversations like new homestead room are triggered for my character, which is host of the game, was second character in char creation (weird) and the one that initiates the teleport to homestead, which all might be factors in what chooses the conversation partner. In an earlier patch version (1.0.36 or .37) when the multiplayer character creation wasn't implemented yet and I built my friend's character on his behalf then HIS character would get talked to by zixzax.

Other auto-conversations are simply by proximity.

The only solution is a little weird: change your party grouping (button at top left) and choose the vertical line, then put your character for conversation in front. In that way all dialogs triggered by the game will be with your front character.

I found this design rather weird, but in general the game seems not well ballanced for social/utility skills. The system will push players to ignore those skills and use some specialized Henchman do that sort of job, which is a bad class/party build design in my opinion. Not that's the whole is bad, but it's a bad point of this element of the game.

You guys are missing the point. Most convos begin with whoever is in front yes, but if you teleport, reload, or change zones the game auto selects the character that was created in the number two slot in the character creator screen and starts the convo with them. Not the person in front.

There is no way to fix this and it sucks when character "one" has all of your charm skills, and character "two" has something like "know it all" or "stench".

I restarted the game for this reason and made my "main" in slot two.

Ha ha you could be right I need check, I had a case of teleport and dialog before I found the trick of the line group, and to solve it I unlinked the party. Well I won't restart play because of that most cases are when exploring anyway.
