What is the required item and where? I HAD to have picked it up but I can't find it in my inventories.

By the time you get enough items for the dog to smell the quest would have already solved itself. Regardless the items that the dog can smell have "smelly" on them. There are multiple ways to solve the murder but I would suggest talking to the town's healer and carefully investigating the basement of the game's most obvious suspect.

it's pretty obvious as they're usually marked "smelly." Like for Esmeralda or whatever her name is, it's "Smelly panties" or something (+1 charisma). Another of the items is a smelly scarf. I never found the third. You don't really need to to do this to complete the quest.

I found smelly socks in the Aureus' place, never found the scarf though

i just found one item and it didnt have anything like smelly in the title, i think it was used or dirty or something.... however it was the right item and the dog smelled jake on it...

The item i found was.
an item from evelynns room, next to the doctors office.

just go talk to murphy about jake and he will smell the item. as far as i recall you dont have to give him anything, just have it in your inventory.

I'm farther than that. I have the panties, socks, and stuff. I'm off to evelynn's hideout now so hopefully I get whatever I need from there. Never found a scarf.

Evelyn drops a smelly item. You cna take it to the dog and he'll confirm that it smells like Jake.
