They guard the most evil and disgusting thing that ever existed... anywhere and anytime.
One thing I did notice as odd was that there was no fourth watcher statue. It was something called "anger" and its dialog was unrelated to the other three.
EDIT: I meant the map. So will any magic do, or does it need to be offensive magic?
well all of the statues give hints at how to progress in the thread, one particularly gives almost says you directly what to do, just read it^^.
they said that they need to be freed with their elements, so just take spellcaster / scroll-wielder and attack the statues with their element (attack fire with a flare or fireball, earth with a poison dart or boulder, water with a freezing / chilling chard and air with lightning.
one of the statues shows you the futuroe or rather ending of your adventure...watch it ;). also in the cave they guard is a person which talks are more or less an easter-egg, i loved it^^.
