I've been playing RPGs for 20 years. The Staff of Pergamon quest is the only time a "Fetch" has ever left me conflicted.
I've never even had to thing twice before--of course you hand over the powerful magical artifact to the quest-giver instead of taking it for yourself. They're always either weaker than the gear you already have, or not sufficiently more powerful to warrant doing the dishonorable thing.

But the Staff of Pergamon is 200% more poweful than the best mage staff I've found so far. I'm conflicted, I am, because there's even a third aspect at play trying to influence my decision--it's a fire-based staff, and most of the enemies I've encountered so far have been resistant to fire.

This is just one of countless examples of really good game design in DOS, but it was so refreshing and unexpected I just had to point it out.

Staff only matters if you attack with it I think. So, as a mage you will be casting your spells mostly anyways, so the staff will be useless.

What would be really interesting is something like in Dragon's Dogma, where *not* turning it in causes interesting things further down the road. Perhaps that already happens. I don't have a whole lot of time to dedicate during the week so I haven't gotten far yet.

Kudos, however.

Staffs (staves?) also effect the basic 4AP spell, so they're very useful. Especially early in the game with a mage that only has fire spells, you'll need a non-fire staff to do any damage at all to several of the enemies North of Cyseal.

I didnt find the staff of pergamon very usefull. I have a rare (green) staff with +1 int and +15% curse on it and finding that more useful that the +1 constitution, +10poison res, + 5% burn, and even the +4crit chance, on the staff of pergamon. For at spell caster intellect is hugely usefull, those other stats, not so much, except for the +4% crit but it's not near good enough, especially because staff of pergamon only got 1,5x to crit dmg. Concerning the 4AP staff spell (magic missile) it's really not very good. It's only useful very very early in the game. A bit later in to the game, when you have all four characters (unless u picked lone wolf) it does way too little damage, and your group will/should at that time be using quite a varied number of attacks, spells etc. and not the staff spell.

Who do you even turn the staff into? Is it still in Cyreal area? Or past that? IF IT'S PAST IT DON'T TELL ME!

I think you give it to Conrad at the docks in Cyseal.

No you give it to the Mayor, named Cedric.

This is who you give it to :) The Mayor.

Before the patch, you could keep it and retalk to the Mayor then give it, or keep it again, constantly raising your materialistic trait value and decreasing your attitude with the mayor.

Yes a minor bug if you stumble onto it, but an annoying one once you know it is there.
Not sure if the bug still exists after the patch.

Either way, whichever you choose both give a different achievement ;)

So naturally I denied then gave for both achievements lol.

This staff is pretty bad for a mage.
