How to get murphy to smell the items of suspects?

So ive got my list of suspects... i went and stole some stuff from them... but how the deuce do i get Murphy to smell their stuff to see if they are the culprits in Jakes murder??

just talk with him. I don't remembered which choice it is but when you talk with him about the murder and if you have clothes from suspects you will have the possibility to ask him to smell it.

Does it have to be clothes? i took some books and cups and stuff from them and i don't seem to have any new dialogue options or anything

The quest is totally optional. It don't matter if you do it or not.

Each of the 4 suspects have 'smelly' items you can steal or acquire in various ways. if it doesn't say 'smelly' the dog won't smell it. :)
