Is poison damage a bad pick?
It just seems that picking a poison based champion is pretty much useless.

Nearly everything up to lvl 10-12 which I have played the game to so far have been resistant to poison damage in one way or another and the few enemies that do take damage from it could be killed faster with pretty much any other spells or attacks.

want to use it in the starting area? Lol, nope.
How about next area? well it might work on orcs an humans, but not on all those goblins or plants that infest the area.

Seems like trying to play a poisonous backstabber or necromancer is a sad choice in this game. Can't even deal bleeding damage during the first part of the game.

So why do so many characters start wih these cool but useless skills that will only help make the game harder for any new player out there?

I will agree that it is not so useful in the first few places but with some creativity it isn't completely useless. For example, use an ability with poison ground effect around a mob with fire on the ground and great a giant explosion. Also things like the spider will also be immune to poison but still do regular damage as well. That being said I did find poison useful on a few of the bosses in the first zone just not the first one.

I leave poison damage to my archer when need be. Because early on the undead are immune it will be awhile before a poison-damage dealing character becomes effective. Later on in the game poison can be very effective on certain enemies.

If an archer isn't shooting poison arrows, that is okay because they can shoot another type but if all your mage can do is throw poison damage at a poison immune enemy then you might have problems.

Geomancy does have some good utility to it Bless, Fortify, Earth Shield, Immunity to Poison (which isn't bad early on). Some good summons: spider, wolf, elemental. It also has some nice CC in petrify, boulder bash and earthquake. Earth damage is quite rare even among the spells, but it is rarely resisted. That said if you hit a burning enemy with poison spores you'll get about 6 explosions, which is pretty nice mid game.

Best of poison isn't poisoning but fire, not only with spells or arrows but also weapons with some fire effects.

My biggest problem with poison is it's interaction with fire. It's great vs something that is weak to both poison and fire... but with 2 melee chars, I don't exactly like the idea of a sea of fire/poison (of which there have been several) covering the entire battlefield.

At least not until I get that 90%+ Fire resistance... then I might start liking poison more ^^
