Pretty sure the whole Kirkbride angle happened with this movie. I know at least one fan who wants to see a spinoff in which workers remove asbestos from the Hanwell institute.
Also, I should recommend another lesser horror hit from that decade: Madhouse (2024)

Come think of it, THAT may have been the film that inspired Asylum, as Scratches was approaching completion.
