Best combat builds?
I am curious to see what you, as fellow players, think the most effective combat choice is.
What is your weapon of choice? Do you favor dodge, or block, or neither? Do you like armor that allows for the best damage reduction, or do you prefer to have no THC penalty? Do you use alchemy, or is that the 'cowards way'?

There are so many different paths to take when it comes to combat. I want to try to pit different builds against each other to determine if one type of build really stands out, where as another might fall short entirely.

So far, here are my thoughts:
I prefer to have a high THC when it comes to combat, so I chose my armor accordingly. That being said, I also prefer to have dodge over block, as block seems to lack in usefulness when compared to dodge, therefore I prefer to have armor that allows for decent mobility (low armor penalty). I also believe spears to be an effective weapon choice. It allows for combat diversity, safe spotting while still using melee, and the passive chance to stab individuals attempting to get within close quarters is quite amazing. I think critical strikes are useful, but I find its usefulness to deteriorate beyond level 5 or 6.

The following are the highest kill counts for each type of weapon (limited to posts on this thread only) -

Lee, Spear Master: 163 Kills

My rule of thumb is Offence < Defence
Always level your defensive(block, dodge) stat in favor of your offensive stat.

1) I thought block and dodge did not work efficiently together.
2) How many kills or how far have you gotten with that build?

1) They don't. When you start your playtrough as a fighter, you have to pick either dodge or block, not both.

2) I've gotten 143 kills with dodge and 2-handed axe while cladded in heavy armor. Could've killed more, but i skipped a few quests.

Heh, you're saluting the wrong guy. Mindless competed the game without spending any skill points into dodge or block.

Look.

8/10/8/6/4/4

Hammer 4-5

Dodge 5-6

Alchelmy / crafting +3 (I havent really used this musch)

Just stack Dodge and hammer and you can complete the Teron quests (by killing all)

So I've heard. I do peek around the pinned threads every now and then ;).

I wonder how he does it.

I just stole a peak at his profile. It seems this apparent legendary psychopath has been playing the game since early February of last year; it's no wonder he knows his way around the game.

I tried (fairly reckless for someone who has yet to experience post-Teron content beyond four or so fights in the arena, and who has yet to even leave Teron with any combat focus build) but when I found myself throwing points into Dodge to survive an encounter (Milty's first pair of goons) I decided I had failed. :behind:

It'd be fun (and informative) to see some play-by-play guides (based on the current released version of the game) for a variety of builds especially for combat focused builds, as I suspect especially in the early Teron stage of the game quest order, fight order, and SP expenditure priority/order is crucial to maximizing success (and minimizing reloads). And gear/consumable acquisition/use.

There are some entertaining guides up now (which sold me on the game, in fact) but they are based on pre-released builds.

As the game gets more popular I'm sure some Youtubers will cover a variety of builds in either a guide or by a simple Let's-Play. I would personally make a walk through on how to use the spear build effectively (I am the best spear player in the world of course), but I lack decent recording software and I'm sure no one wants to hear my voice :P.

I'd rather see a non-video guide, with liberal screenshots, like yevgeniy_mayba did with their "Doofus" guide.

YouTube videos can be excellent for general overview or inspirational guides, but I like things I can pull up in the heat of the game via Steam overlay. That aren't videos. :behind:

Spear is how I "beat" the tutorial fights. I'd love to see a good spear guide.

That is completely unfeasible. I don't know how long ago that picture was taken.

I see lots of "ultimate builds" claiming fame and glory, but none post guides or are detailed about how they've achieved them. For starters, there seem to be way too many skill points in that pic. He has 134 unspent points, and 9 axe, 7 crits and 4 skills maxed or near maxed. That's without "spending" the points as you say.

Yeah, show me a detailed guide on how to achieve that build in the current patch (i.e. 1) Start with Merc 2) level a + b 3) Do quest 1 4) Level b+c with results etc..).

Meanwhile, I'll remain cautiously skeptical.

Good catch; surprised nobody's commented on that in the thread. Surprised I didn't notice! :D

I feel a little better with how far I was able to go, maybe. :D
