I never tried Lorenza's way though (not for thieves guild), but I suspect it's similar in this regard.
If unlocking the god ending is the final goal though, you might try hitting that "red button" right after using the machine... technically, you use it before leaving for Ganezzar, so it's possible that the Abyss won't be locked yet (though I didn't check). That would set you up working for Meru, which gives Al-Akia access, which is the most easy-to-miss requirement.
Get 2 Points of CoN from 2 Healing Machines
and Gain Access to AlAkia to become god .
The way i did it with a thief(i think thief is the only one who can do it anyway) was :
Proceed with your questline in Maadoran as usual , while having 5 Lore to open conversations about the machine with Levir , kill Gaelius so levir brings you to healing chamber , kill Levir and use the machine yourself - This wont kick you out of Maadoran , now you can go to Abyss , and choose to destroy the city by doing that you will end all guild quest lines and in Ganezzar Meru will task you with finding AlAkia
Oh, and I think it should also be possible with a merchant.
You can also join HA after you used both tubes in the first healing machine by betraying the thieves during their last mission to House Aurelian.
